At a lot of my shows kids or adults release helium filled balloons in the air outside. I was thinking about placing my card on each balloon so when it comes down, I will receive advertisement. What you think about that?

Your going to p*ss off the dolphin people or get a ticket for littering

Those are amateur balloon releases that likely do not comply with balloon legislation. Do you want your name associated with that? Instead, I would research balloons and offer a safe, more professional alternative and make more money per show! You can also use Dynamike imprinted balloons.

Yes, totally serious. There are ways to do balloon releases, but being in the entertainment biz as professionals I would advise you do it correctly if offering it to your clients. Go to balloonhq.com for more details. I don't know much about it, only that I've read about it, as I really don't work with helium. I know there are specific laws for California as well as laws about metallic balloons and/or metallic ribbon. Apparently, they have gotten caught in telephone wires and caused electrical problems, not to mention problems with pollution and animals choking as has been mentioned.

Maybe it's because I'm from california , but I hate it when people release balloons, and I think finding a business card in that situation would have opposite of the desired effect on me.

Alexa is right. Here in North Carolina and Virginia, for example, mylar balloons must be secured to a weight to prevent accidental release and intentional release is prohibited.
Released latex balloons must be certified biodegradable or photodegradable, must be hand sealed with a tied knot and cannot be attached to any string, ribbon or other tether that could entangle sea and wild life. Such latex balloons can be released in lots consisting of no more than 10 balloons per 24 hour period. Violations are recorded as littering and are subject to up to $250 in fines. Scientific and weather research balloons are exempt from these rules. No offense, Mike, but I personally think you could find much more fiscally effective and practical methods for marketing your services. This is just too hit and miss and you could receive very negative press coverage if an environmentalist group decided to attack you. On the other hand, if your state permits bulk balloon releases - you COULD receive some outstanding media coverage by sponsoring a charity balloon race. Sell the biodegradable latex (Qualatex, for example) balloons for $1.00-$2.00 (all proceeds to a children's charity), attach a post-paid "Return to Sender" card with the entrant's name and countdown to a mass launch from a city park or monument. The farthest returned postmark within, say, a 3-4 week midnight deadline receives a donated prize package. With the right promotion, this could be a great promotion... provided the environmentalists and animal rights peeps don't hunt you down and picket or seek an injunction. Just a thought...

I'm not a huge fan of this specific idea, but I do love the fact that Mike and Skip are both thinking out of the box on ways to accomplish some self-promotion!
Heck, if you do this, and get negative publicity, that actually may work to your benefit anyway. Could open up new markets to folks fed up with environmentalist preaching. Bill yourself as the "Eco-Insensitive Entertainer!" Maybe even come up with a "Pave the Planet" Show for Anti-Earth Day. God help me, I'm starting to ramble... ... need more coffee.... --Jack
