We had a blast yesterday. More then 50 people showed up, ranging in ages from 14 to over 70, all to discuss the Expert at the Card Table. And they were in for a treat.
We started off with Tom Ransom, one of the world's foremost magic book collectors, who delivered a really interesting talk on various Erdnase editions and also the publications that inspired it and were later inspired by it! We got to see some very rare books, including first editions and early 1905 hardback Drakes, and several of the magazines that contained the first mention of Erdnase and Milton Franklin Andrews (the first Erdnase candidate). This was the perfect segue into the next special guest- Martin Gardner. Yes, THE Martin Gardner. Martin regaled us all with the story of how he became interested in Erdnase, the search for Milton, and then dropped a bombshell when he revealed new evidence to support his candidate! It was a thrill to talk with him, and the whole group let him know it with thunderous applause. After a brief 5 minute break we reconvened to have some Erdnase cake. Check out some pictures here: http://pincmagic.blogspot.com/2009/09/ex......ble.html and a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEcy-o7g_ps Not only was it the coolest cake I've ever seen, but it was one of the tastiest! Thanks Sheryl! Once people had gorged themselves (it really was a delicious cake!) we began to talk about the actual book. Several people, including Lee Asher, Sammy J., James Fullford (James in Toronto), Glenn West and Ariel Fralich brought up some really interesting points (which I will be sharing with you all at a later date- stay tuned!) and we spent the next hour and a half going back and forth discussing them. I have to say it was a lot of fun, and one of the points was something I had never thought of, and was REALLY interesting. Again, I'll be sharing some of the comments and topics a little later. Afterwords, once we had left the Browser's Den (our wonderful sponsor for the event. Thanks Jeff for having us, and for keeping the shop open late for us!) about a dozen of us went out to eat, and we spent the next two hours sharing our magic, discusing giving our magic context/meaning, and of course, Erdnase. Thank you to everyone who made this such a fun event, and stay tuned for info on upcoming ones! All the best, Ben Train
