The fairs historically did well in hard times because they were inexpensive
family entertainment. That isn’t true anymore. A family of four would probably spend a couple hundred bucks attending one of the larger fairs. If the attendance is down the fair management’s solution has been to rise the gate, concert and rent prices to cover the bottom line. Unfortunately, this drives the attendance down further. A friend was playing a state fair this year with a small grind show. He was charging a $1 and business was slow. Many vendors were down 50-60 percent from last year. The concessions manager, who cruising around on his golf cart, stopped to see how things were going. After hearing how slow it was, he suggested the showman double his price to $2 to make up for the poor attendance...good idea??? If you think it is...you might as well hang that $5 admission sign.

The inflated price of a beer or a dog or a plate of crappy Chow Mein also keeps the folk away the NEXT year. Really sad situation.
They need to lower the freakin' gate sure but the parking at $15 (and up) really sucks!

$5.00 sign, with a pitch of "special 40% off".

I have been knocking around the idea of lowering my admission to 50 cents, but with the price of the booth space and other expenses, I don;t know if I can justify that quite yet. Maybe as the depression grinds further on, yes, but not quite yet...

It is a classic death cycle for a business. Low profit, raise prize, still less profit, raise prize . . .

If the crowds aren't coming in...you need to do something.
Lowering the price is one of several things you can do. The lower price can be a big incentive if money's tight in the area your playing. However...if there are no people at the fair, it doesn't really matter what you do. Quote: On 2009-09-30 04:32, abigkahuna/1 wrote:

One of the TV stations in Tulsa gave a family of four $250 to
spend a day at the fair. How long did the money last? (I'll give you the answer later...) Quote: On 2009-09-29 15:49, Rick West wrote:

That's because the guy at the entrance put a chalk mark on their coats.
