Magical Friends:
I'm working in a show where a girl has to appear from a picture and I know that The Pendragons have a similar effect in which a girl appears from a painting. Can anybody tell me where can I buy (or how can I build) a painting to get this effect? (the image of the girl must disappear from the painting when the girl is on the stage) Thanks in advance! - Pedro III - |

There are two effects that I'm aware of. One that Jonathan did, the other was by Brett Daniels. I'm not sure if someone owns the rights to it. I think it falls under "artists dream". Does anyone know if someone owns this?

There is a very practical version of the Artist's Dream illusion that may suit your needs. It is called "The Artist's Daydream" and it is explained in "Device and Illusion" by Jim Steinmeyer.
BTW, Artist's Dream as presented in it's classic form was created by David Devant.

There are truly some gems in "Device and Illusion". Do look there, the price is quite reasonable as well as the clarity it provides!

Hello!!
I saw this kind of illusion done with a picture of Marilyn Monroe. The picture was hanging over the magician, a cloth fell in front of it and then down to the floor where the magician caught it. After that the picture frame was empty and "Marilyn Monroe" appeared under that cloth that he was holding. Patrick Thomas |

There are others who perform this as well. However, I believe royalties are involved. If I remember correctly, Bill Smith built Brett's version. I would call him up & ask.

Royalties are required for the routine that Brett performs. However, not for the classic version. Also, the Steinmeyer version is licensed to the owner of the book upon purchase of 'Device and Illusion.'

Yes, the version I was referring to with royalties was Brett's. The version in D&I is very nifty, and a TON more practical for most performers. Anyone here ever use it?

I have been working on a version of the Artists Daydream from Device and Illusion and think it will work well for my purposes.
However while doing research a few months ago, I came across the illusion that is pretty much the same as Brett Daniels that is manufactured exclusively by Owen Magic. They state that they have gone to court to protect this particular illusion as to guarantee exclusive performance rights. http://www.owenmagic.com/Illusions/Illus......s_5.html Michael |

Nicholas Night and Kinga do a version of this. He comes on and does a spraypaint woman on a large frame. He spins it and it is blank again and Kinga runs out of it!

A Modern Cabinet with a scrim roller blind could give you the effect of the girl visibly appearing from/in the portrait.
Cabinet shown empty, blind pulled down with portrait of girl on it. Lights come up in cabinet revealing girl inside. Blind goes up. (The blind going up is almost invisible). Just a thought. Blair Marshall

Paul Osborne has plans on this. Do they use the same method as in Device and illusion? And how much would it cost to build thi seffect and how long could it be made in if someone with basic woodwork skills tryed to make it?

J.C. Sum has a very nice version of this effect, in his book Illusionary Departures. The illusion also employs an audience member too.
Infact, I'm considering building this effect myself. J.C. also gives alternative ideas for presentation of this effect. I highly recommend this book. |

Has anyone actually performed Jim Steinmeyer's "Artists Day Dream?" I own the book and am interested in building one. I would love to here a review.

I saw it performed about six years ago in a club setting. Technically, the illusion worked and has the potential to be a very powerful effect. Unfortunately, the performer's presentation was very dry and really brought the entire impact down. However, it does seem to be a great illusion, just give it a solid presentation.

I own an Artist's Daydream that was built by Shadow Magic & Illusion in Los Angeles two years ago. It was only used a few times and is in excellent condition. It has some improvements over the original Steinmyer version and comes with additional aluminum frames for quick resetting of the photograph and/or painting. The illusion is very well made and breaks down for transport. It does not have a case. If you are interested, contact me. I'm selling it for a fraction of what I paid for it and it will include free shipping in the USA only.
Do not go where the path may lead, but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
