Not too long ago there was a post of Jonathan Pendragon performing Jim Steinmeyer's Cube-ism illusion. The performance and illusion did very little for me. It was just sort of interesting. One comment by a Café member was he thought Jim fell flat on this particular illusion. After reading Jim's new book and being given some insight to his idea of the illusion and what the story line should be I have a far better appreciation of the illusion and what should take place during the performance. I think that sometimes magicians choose the wrong illusion to perform. It dosen't fit their personality, as a result it does not go over very well. While there is no doubt that Jonathan is an excellent magician with a unique style and very good at what he does I don't think this illusion was a good choice for him simply because of who he is. It doesn't fit his personality or style. As a result what was supposed to be conveyed to the audience was not.

Bill Smith built a few of these including the Pendragons. After certain , um...enhancements, Charlotte didn't fit. Instead of returning the prop for a modification, they replaced the back with spandex which required a girl to ride it for concealment. This was a contributing factor to peoples negative reaction to it.

Thanks for sharing that Craig, it certainly explains a lot for me. I had the same opinion as Gulamerian. In fact, until I heard it was in Jim's new book, I had refused to believe that it was his design. I mean, Jim and his builders are masters of their craft and this ... well, what I saw in the video was lacking the necessary deception required of an illusion of this nature. But now after studying it in Jim's book I totally get it! It's a great concept and I would love to see one properly built and performed.
Craig, do you know who else Bill Smith has built this for and if any one of them are currently touring with it? Thanks! James |
