I agree with you on not completely destroying the guy. But, with that said, there comes a point when enough is enough.

My heart agrees with Greg, I like to be a nice guy.
My brain though realizes there are consequences to actions. When a young 14 year old fella puts together a very sub par routine and has the instructions written up so poor that you cannot decipher the effect (I haven't seen it, I am just taking Hank Lee's words for it HERE), and sells it for $25 there is going to be a lot of negative consequence. Hank Lees is pulling off the shelves and offering a refund to anyone who purchsed it from them. When he posted a video of the effect in the thread referenced a few posts up, you can see many many many posts telling the young man that the routine was not good and constructive criticism why. Nevertheless, he decided to release it and really has to take the fallout for something he brought on hiself. There is a difference between sharing a bad routine with "the guys", and getting kind advice for improvment versus taking this bad routine to the marketplace and taking money for it. There is a higher level of responsibility when you put out a product, and you open yourself up to major criticism. You are in cross hairs the second you decide to charge money for bad magic. Unfortunately for the kid I think his decision to put this out is more a case of youthful ignorance than anything, but consequences don't go away. |

I don't think it was even a 3 Fly. It was more of a "wave my hands really fast and take the coin in front of you fly." lol.

More or less, that's what a layman would think...

I always try not put people down. I don't try to bash effects. I just say if they are worth it or not. Hope my post wasn't too harsh.
This may be an exception. This doesn't even look like he tried. This looks like something that Symmatrix and his buddy came up with in a few minutes and decided to market without it being used in the real world all to make some cash!! I don't think that is right to put thoughtless material out to the magic community like that. Trying to steal our money essentially. Forgive me if I am wrong.... Andrew |

You guys are all right in that respect. It's just I'm sure out there that some magicians may be feeling horrible for Sean's inner feelings. I know I really do. I wish there was an easier way to tell him to take it off that market, but I guess everyone has tried. I don't know how others feel, but I just feel bad tbat a living human is being put-down so roughly.

Bumbleface,
I think he is the one who took other people's ideas and trashed them. Sean is not being put down. I don't think his feeling will be hurt either. This should be an experience he learns from. Take the proper time to research and develope an effect. Don't rush out something just to show people you think you know what you are doing. Just because you are young and creative does not mean you have to try push some half%^&$% material on the market. |

I'm sure Sean understands that criticising a particular example of one's work is not criticising the person.
If you want to grow as an artist, you have to be able to take criticism, and not everyone will be kind. I took plenty when I was starting out. If you grit your teeth, listen, and work harder, you'll be fine. Best, Geoff

I think Dan Watkins has said it the best so far:

I think I would feel worse about this situation if the Symmatrix people were not taking money for this product. The reactions towards this idea would probably be a whole lot more constructive and less destructive if people didn't feel like they were being ripped off! |

True Fly is when you make a trade with Kakronen, then he flies the coup. Any posts by this individual should be deleted since he is not trustworthy. He had trouble on Ebay and here at the Café.

If someone puts out something, of course its going to be critizied.
But I don't see how or why there has to be sugar for the medicine to go down. He put it out there for people to see, and when people give their opinions, you have to accept them. Watering down your reaction will not help him. Being truthful will. |

He was told in so many words or less it sucked before he put it out. He purposefully put it out anyway. I don't think there is anything that can be said, good, bad, watered, truthful, etc. that is going to "help him".
