Be careful when you do eitherCigarette Thru Coin or Coin Thru Bottle.
It's not safe any more to borrow a coin. I have made this fatal mistake and it about killed me. What I'm trying to say is, those coins are made out of the older quarters, and one time when I asked to borrow a quarter they gave me one of the new State quarters (luckily I always have a backup plan, but it was close) :fruity:
P.S. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if "Q" and "R" were eleminated

Just have a couple of regular coins that are duplicates in your pocket. Then ask your audience if someone has a couple that you can borrow and at the same time take out your coins and place them on the table with the ones that you borrow from the audience. Then, by using either a magicians choice or a PATEO, get an acceptable coin to perform the effect with. As I am from Canada, I carry both American and Canadian coins with me for just such a reason.

or you can just reach into your pocket and pull out a quarter, ask them to inspect it, do whatever they want with it and then do a switch...

yeah I did a backup routine by borrowing 3 more quarters and doing a matrix routine.

Or you could start by asking for an older quarter because you'd like to show them something that the new quarters can't do. "They just don't make 'em like they used to".
Just an idea. Scott

I did see, however, both a folding quarter and a cig through quarter but made from the new Golden Dollars.. little more expensive.. and rare to find one from someone.. but I'll tell ya what... it's flashy and looks spectacular

I would just have a bunch of duplicate quarters in my pocket and have them take one. Why make a big deal of it? Casual handlings fry a lay audience, and often magicians as well.

Talking of switching, what is the best switch for table magic? I need one for an act I'm putting together and personally I don't rate Bobo!

A shuttle pass or a retention switch.

Re: the golden dollar coins. You can explain that gold is a softer metal. That is why you use this type of coin. Show a real one, and then switch it out for the gaff. Science, baby, science. I use the science angle for my rubber band routine. CMH, etc...

Just out of curiosity, if you are doing the effect for several people. When I do my routine, I don't worry. If someone gives me an old quarter, I look at it and say "oh it's one of those."
This does a couple of things for me. If the spectator gave me an old quarter the audience thinks it's a new quarter, and the spectator who gave me the old one is hearing something different. Also I switch for the gimmick and show the gimmick quarter around, making sure not to show the coin to the spectator who gave it to me. Why should I show it to him again he is the one who gave it to me, he knows I am "only using his quarter" I put the coin in the bottle, show it around saying to them you can see spectators quarter in the bottle, they of course will say yes. Walk back over to the spectator, shake the bottle near him, shake it out, hand him his quarter back and nobody is the wiser. I believe it's all attitude. I used to worry with all of the different coins but not anymore since I started using this technique it goes over everytime. If it's one on one I do not do the effect. I hope this helps, just my 2 cents worth. Thank you |

I would just use my own quarter and at the end of the effect give it to a spectator to examine and keep. If you are really paranoid about it, you could have a cig through quarter made so the cig passes through the head side of the quarter and comes out the tail side (maybe they come like this, I don't know as I've never owned one).
With the Johnson type gimmick, you can't show but one side of the coin anyway. As for the coin in bottle, you could have a coin made using a two headed quarter, then the coin will always land in the bottle heads side up! |

Johnson Products will do special orders. It's kinda pricey but worth it if you have special needs like these. You can even supply the coins if need be.

I always have a duplicate coin that matches the gimmick. That way I have no worries.
