Every once in awhile you go on a hot streak buying items that you will use and not bury in your drawer.
My hot streak is still going strong The Amazing $20 Bill trick is a fun and very good effect. Pretty simple to do plus.... It can easily fill in 5-10 minutes of your comedy act and is nowhere as messy as the vanishing bandana effect. |

It's a good effect with a solid, simple method. I fooled a roomfull of 60 magicians with it at our monthly magic sale. It fooled me when I first saw it. It's recommended! However...
I don't recommend overdoing the reactions while you and your audience listen to the faux instructions on the CD; maybe Mr. Romhany gets away with a cartoon-ish performance for a cruise ship audience, but you won't, so please, for the love of all that is good, don't mimic him... it will insult your audience. The first DVD performance felt disingenuous to me, and I believe it's a good example of how not being your natural self can alienate the crowd (it sure as h*ll made me uncomfortable). I didn't believe for a second the "magician in trouble" premise, because I can't believe someone who's overacting. I've seen Paul Romhany's website, and I like better what I see there: a stage version of him that's closer to reality, someone I can connect with. The performance he gave on the instructional DVD, to be blunt and maybe too harsh, is more suitable to an audience of 4-6 year olds, not a cruise ship audience of 46 year olds. Maybe the goofy, overdone DVD performance isn't representative of how he performs this for adults. There was a second performance at the end of the DVD I recall liking a little better. It was shorter, and that's also good; better pacing. If a cruise-ship performer treated me as if I were the mental equivalent of algae, I'd drop my crab cakes and head for the door immediately. So... buy the effect and use it; you'll be very happy with the method. Perform it like Mr. Romhany did at the beginning of the DVD, aside from a preschool show, and I and my cohorts will send assassins. We must protect the art.

I agree with you Mike that it seemed like the presentation was geared toward 6 year olds. After watching the performance, I threw it on the shelf because the presentation just didn't fit my personality. It seemed fake and too much overacting.
Originally I wanted to have my wife re-record her voice using the short script and transfer the audio to my iphone and use a small coin envelope instead of a DVD and CD that's provided. I'm 29 and I definitely want to give a better presentation to my age group and older. I'll give this another shot later on but there's better effects out there. |

Any demo of it.

I bought this, and honestly, I couldn't bear even getting to the instructional part because I couldn't get through Paul's performance/demo before the instruction began. Harsh, yes, but man, it was probably the hardest thing to endure in a long while.
I just don't know how to present this to make it work in my style. |

Demo is only on the vid but it'll make you cringe
someone needs to come up with a better presentation. Put this in the hands of Greg Wilson and he can make this a winner. Maybe for those that bought it, we can build a storyboard on this thread and just combine ideas specifically for presentation/patter? I really want to make this effect work but not with the presentation given to us on the DVD. |

Write your own "instructions" and read them as you perform. No need to have a pre-recorded track.

Interesting ....
I tend to look at the performance as a spectator. At the end I ask myself, "did I enjoy it". Then I look past the performance and focus on the effect itself. I ask myself if it fits my style of performance. If it does then I learn the effect and adapt to my own style. Based on what I saw in the trailer, I like and would certainly buy it. I love puppetry and I can see myself performing the routine along with a puppet (handled by another person) reading the instructions ... for kids of course.

And that is the key, finding a routine and effect that is workeable and making it your own by adding in your own personality.
I am sure we all agree , the effect itself, is very good. And for me, I most likely would have some of Paul's tendencies. |
