I am helping a ministry called Neighborhood Bible Time for the summer. They hire 50 Bible College students as evangelists to hold week long youth crusades. They work with children and teenagers. The program is over 50 years old and a lot of their tricks are very old. The executive director wants me to update the tricks for next year. Most of the men have little or no ability in sleight of hand so simple is good. They have effectively used illusions like the Foo Can and the Change Bag for years. These are just two examples to help get our minds going. They don't all have to have gospel applications. Some of them are just attention getters. Also, purchasing 50 of anything will get quite expensive so we are not looking for stuff that costs big bucks. Also, they must be able to hold up traveling in a suitcase for each summer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, FC |

FC,
I'd try to get them going on some basic rope magic, it's cheap and not too difficult to learn. Also, what about the coin through rubber trick? James. |

Most of this will be platform type tricks. They will have to be very visual. When I travelled with NBT I had one rally of about 700 children. There will be some walk around type stuff for the evangelist to use while he mingles with the children during lineup time.
Good idea with the ropes. We have that in our format already. Every evangelist has a length of rope almost 4' around his neck and learns 4 or 5 tricks with that. Any ideas for that would be welcome. FC |

This is a bit out there, but since you are using College Students, it shouldn't be too bizarre for them, and it will cost a bit - when you go times 50, but D'Lites are a great attention getter.
I do a routine, called "Bad Thoughts", using D'Lites, a helper with D'lites, or a helper shining a laser pointer. I first look around over my head, then look around the room, taking note of a pretty girl, then look up again in contemplation and ...watch out there, Got it, and I grab a "bad Thought" from the air and throw it down and stamp on it. Then you can take it wherever you want. I go through the issues of sex, greed, respect for parents, or authority, and a couple others with a little "situation" description to set it up, and then there are those Bad Thoughts. Then I take my Bible, and read it, and store God's Word in my heart, and then I look around, and No More Bad Thoughts.... BroDavid

Two thoughts:
First, what about buying The Mark Wilson Course in Magic and looking through it for ideas? Other than the book, it won't cost much to put a show together. Second, Andre Kole Productions has put together a concept that they call "Transferable Magic." It is a number of commercial tricks that can be used for gospel presentations. Of course it will cost more, but the tricks are time-tested and have been used throughout the world. The web site is http://www.andrekole.org Get on the site and use the e-mail contact. Terry

Show a newspaper and call attention to one or more "bad news" items. In the process, show the "whole" eight pages, perhaps remarking on other items as well. Mention that the bad news in the paper is like the sin in our lives. Only we often have strategies for keeping our sin hidden. If it were as simple as newsprint, we might be inclined to smudge it out. (Proceed with the vanish of milk into a cone made from the newspaper using the milk pitcher). Since that didn't work, we might try to rip the newspaper up in order to cover up the bad news. (Proceed with the Anderson paper tear). Of course, it doesn't work either. It is only when we submit our lives to the hands of God that we can be saved. Sure, there still may be bad news in our lives, but God is in the business of turning our lives into something beautiful for him. (Proceed with various productions, beginning with some silk streamers from the newspaper, and using them for cover -- familiarity with the Anderson routine will know where to hide these). regards, Doug

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming. This is helping. The director already said he wanted D'lites, but that is a great idea to put them to use, David.

You know you might explain your situation to some gospel magic dealers and see if they would help you by giving you some items. You never know. It would be a way for them to sow a little seed.

Any ideas as to gospel dealers other than Doc Haley? Please include links to the site. Thank you guys for the help.

I think you can't go wrong with two effects by Duane Laflin. Get "Bring Them Two By Two" and "Daniel and the Lions". Both are very up to date (fantastic graphics) technically undemanding, but great stories and lessons. They run about $30 each, but are worth every penny and more. I love these two effects. (Can you tell?) They are not on his web site, but you can call and order them directly. Check out Duane's web site at Laflin Magic.

Super needle through balloon might work well for the venue. Plenty of spiritual applications and easy to learn.

First off, I suggest you go to the "Howie diddits" section of the Secret sessions area, this will get you into the Inexpensive side of magic.
Off the top of my head; 1)For the needle thru balloon trick, You can buy 2 (thin) knitting needles at Wal Mart for about $0.79 The balloons you can get at Dollar tree. (On the knitting needles, I slightly sharpen the ends with some fine sandpaper, but they will work without it. I do it so I can throw the balloon in the air and touch the needle to it and see it pop, it fits perfect with my patter.) 2)In the Howie Diddits section there is a link for buying slush powder Ridiculuously cheap. 3) Professors Nightmare---Home depot has a 100' length of nice rope for $9.98. You should be able to make at least 11 of them for that price 4) Cut and restored rope---Wally world again (Wal Mart) has clothesline rope that even looks like magicians rope for about $1.50/ 75' 5) The Cups and Balls is a good simple trick, and you can use styrofoam coffee cups that are very cheap, or commonly available everywhere. In a pinch, I wadded up a paper towel for the balls. 6) The Two Card Monte ---as an easy to learn inexpensive trick 7) I am making gospel Hotrods, they are fairly simple, and inexpensive to make. I use the wordless book colors: BLACK -my heart was black with sin RED -Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins, and if we confess our sins to God and ask him to forgive us of our sins, and come into our hearts, his BLOOD washes our sinful hearts... WHITE - as snow, and all of our sins are forgiven. GOLD -When we die we will go to heaven to live with Jesus forever, a place that's so beautiful, that the streets are paved with GOLD GREEN - But before we go to heaven, we have to live here on earth, and to live right, we have to GROW, by reading our Bible and praying. When we read the Bible God is talking to us. when we pray, we are talking to God BLUE - Represents the royalty of God, and that we are now part of His family. If that doesn't get you started, I'll research, some of my stuff from earlier this year, and put more out here. Steve zzz Ps Don't forget to check out The "Howie diddits" section of Secret sessions. I am posting a D'lite clone idea that might work well for you. |
