What an awesome day. Eric was incredible (as always). The evening show was great also. Grasso had some nice manips - very interesting ideas. Reuben is going to be scarry in about 5 years (he's very good now). The MC was dynamite. He was witty and sharp and really on top of the show.
Only one question, I didn't understand the running gag of "will trade magic for s__" Maybe someone can explain that to me. |

Peter,
It was all over the news. A house wife on Craig list wanted world series tickets and was willing to trade sex for the tickets. A sting operation was set up and she was arrested. There were jokes and cartoons on the news and in the papers about it. Apparently some felt this was funny. It didn't go over as was expected.

I too didn't get the significance of the signs but that's because I hadn't heard the stories. Guess it wasn't as widely spread as some thought.
Kudos to Chris Connelly for using his disability as a basis for his act and not a crutch. He was really funny. Peter, sorry I missed you. I was there all day and didn't run into you. The only downside of the convention was something I mentioned a few super Sundays ago. Having to set up the video camera in the front row for the lectures is very distracting and blocks the view of quite a few people, especially at first while it's being adjusted. I've got to say also that the auction was one of the better ones I've seen. Not necessarily because of what was offered but because of the pace the Marti kept it at. This is the first auction I have attended where "bags of stuff" weren't opened and each effect described in detail. No offense to Hank, but things just seemed to move a lot smoother. Even the runners seemed to have a better handle on things this year. Can't wait for the next one. June seems so far away

Thanks for the report. Hopefully I'll get to make the June one. It sounds like I missed another good one.

Bob's next convention is on June 13th 2010 so mark your calendars.
Dave, I'm the camera guy and it is difficult placing the camera in a small room. It is much better at MAES, in a large room. I did get a lot of positive comments on the large projection of the fantastic moves Eric was teaching. For anyone beyond the first row they could not see what he was doing with the cards and coins, hence focusing on the hands. What is difficult was he was on a stage and I had to place the camera high to see his close-up pad. After he was done with the pad I did lower the camera. Maybe next year I will take the 1st seat in the first row and leave the isle free. It might improve some what. In the past I stood up which blocked people. The last couple of times I was seated. If anyone has any suggestion, I am willing to listen. A remote is not practical because most performers do not know how to frame their close up demonstrations. They are constantly going out of frame. When this happens I have to zoom out and the visual becomes smaller. Eric for the most part was familiar with this procedure. Maybe I can convince the next person to do it off the stage, like MAES. In which Case the camera is at my seated eye level. Many time in this situation everyone needs to focus on the enlarged view on the screen. Dennis

Dennis, my comment wasn't personal. I know you were running the camera. My comments came from some things I heard from those around me. First, the focusing and direction of the camera wasn't done until Eric had started. The opening routine was lost to some both because the camera was being adjusted and because it was difficult for you to get behind the camera because of the cramped space. Even with the large screen to the left, those in the second and third row on the right could neither see Eric directly nor see the screen.
Seems to me that with a camera as large and apparently as capable as the one being used, it could have been set up farther back in the aisle and the zoom used to pick up the action. Perhaps if the lecturer were to stand center rather than off to one side, the camera would be fine in the center aisle up front. Another idea might be to set up the camera off to the right and slightly back a few rows. The camera could remain elevated to give everyone a view of the routin and zoom in when the explanation was given. Again, nothing personal, just a few ideas that might be worth looking into.

Dave, I know what you said is not personal, we've been friends to long for either one of use to take anything personal. My comments were to clarify the situation I was given so other may offer suggestions.
I tried the right side and got similar comments about the camera. When ever a zoom is applied a there are other sacifices. May be it will work , I got to look at that the next time. If your there work with me so we can please as many as we can. Maybe if the performer was center on the floor I could put the screen on the stage and shoot over him. It's worth a try. Thanks for the great input and brainstorming ways to make the projection much better. Its a learning experience for all.

Eric Jones was great and a nice guy.
It seems every year there is fewer and fewer people at Bob's. It's not what it used to be. But for the price it's still a good time to have fun. And I'll be at the next one as well. And I loved the joke "will trade magic for sex" that cracked me up. jv |

Let's see... Eagles Game at 1:00 PM, World Series Game at 8:00PM, Rain, Cold, Hmmm. Do you think this has something to do with the low attendence.
Eric was excellent. It was a buyer's Auction a Fender Passport mini ($300 value) could have been bought for $50. A Virtual Soundman brand new $100, Many $100 dollar items going for $10-$25 dollars. DVDs going for 3-$10, Lots of Prop items going for less the $20.00. Martini did an excellent job as auctioneer. The evening show was typical but had a few surprises that were enjoyable. If you didn't go you missed out! For those interested, due to these economical time, the conventions, KIDabra, MAES, Bob Littles, and those I asked about, Martini, Jersey Jam, were all low in attendance, so the economy does have an effect on the attendance.

Not really, I'm talking over the years it's decaying. Eagles have always played during Bob's convention. Yes the Phillies might have a little to do with it but you can not deny the attendance is lower and lower every year. "Martini did an excellent job as auctioneer." Martini always does great, helluva nice guy too. "For those interested, due to these economical time, the conventions, KIDabra, MAES, Bob Littles, and those I asked about, Martini, Jersey Jam, were all low in attendance, so the economy does have an effect on the attendance." Why does Kutztown do great every year? They sold over 250 tickets already and the convention not until Nov 14th. And jersey jam is on the 15th I think. Dennis you are right about the auction though, there were a lot of good deals. JV |

I always miss the auction. Oh, the life that I live!
Ok, I get the joke now. Fun day. Good times. Met some new friends. Mike did a great job booking the acts. Hope to be there in June. |

The sporting events may not be directly affecting the turn out but it does contribute. I think the economy is the major contributor. Look at all local conventions that are held so close together. You have to pick and choose and people just don't have the money they used to have for conventions. At least I don't.

Dave, you are absolutely right that the economy certainly has an effect on everybody. We are doing well registration wise for the Kutztown Convention, but we were very conscious of the economy in setting the price.
I am sure all of those factors you mentioned had an effect at Bob's event. Mike

Dennis.
Have you tried shooting over their shoulder from a side stance. You can be seen by the audience but I guess you are seen anyway. The pro's have done this on a lot of the video and film that I have been in. Some tight shots I had to cheat a little but they can do that. |
