Good clip, back when the Rubik's Cube was still popular.

Very similar to the Uncanny Scots', but different enough to make it his. He always played very well to the crowd.

Thanks for bringing up the clip, as this is the first time I am viewing his chop cup routine.

Very fun to watch, I forgot that he did a CC routine completely. I showed the clip to my 10 year old and she said, “Did you wear funny cloths like that in the old days.”
Thanks for posting the clip, Bruce |

I still wear funny clothes like that now!!! That was delightful to watch. Thanks for sharing, Mike. It took me right back. Doug Henning kept that sense of wonder when he performed, I love that.

Who is the originator of this routine - Larry Jennings or Doug Henning?

I believe it is a couple of routines that are strung together.
I do not believe that it is Larry Jennings' routine entirely. It looks like it is Don Alan, Ron Wilson and Jeff Sheridan that are the influences for this routine, and perhaps also the Jennings routine as well since Ron and Larry were both working on Chop Cup routines along these lines. I say Jeff Sheridan because he was working in NYC in Central Park, as this was mentioned by Doug in the routine. Glad everyone enjoyed the routine, Mike On 2009-11-04 16:52, Mobius303 wrote: Here is a clip that contains several routines, including the Swain Routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqiVeZPf3HM Jim's routine is at about 5 minutes into it. Thanks for the clip! I loved Doug Henning--he was really the one that got me interested in magic. He had such joy in what he was doing. I still love to watch the YouTube clip of his version of "Metamorphosis". It's my all-time favorite version.

Anyone have a source on the Rubik's Cube in Henning's routine?

I believe the Magic Warehouse may have the Cube.

I lived in New York City with a friend, Perry Robinson, during the early 1970s. Perry went to Canada and came back saying he had met a dynamite young magician, Doug Henning, who would be coming to New York and would be stopping by. He had a grant from the Canadian government to study magic (!) and came to New York to study with Slydini.
He stopped by, and we hung out the afternoon exchanging ideas and performing routines for each other. At that point, he had already studied with Vernon and gave me a good tip on Vernon's three-ball routine. I also showed him an effect I believe I had gotten from Ganson's Art of Close-up Magic where a "piece of dust" is place in the hand and transformed to a coin or ball, or whatever, which he liked and I believe he used with a little girl on one of his television specials. About a year, year and a half later, I was living on Long Island. One day, I opened a copy of Newsday and saw a full-page ad for the "Magic Show" on Broadway with Doug Henning. I was floored. I enjoyed watching that clip of him and watched some others too. Thanks. He died much too young. |
