I don't agree with being a 'full time vent' but yet you can't do other things in your act...my two cents. My act is mostly, about 70%, vent. I think the moment you try to say you're only a full time vent because that's all your act is, is the moment you fail to recognize a lot of performers you should have on your list. In reality, especially in this business, often having more than just vent is what gets you the job...after all, "variety is the spice of life", and our audiences crave it.
BTW: Jeff Dunham opens his act with stand up, about ten minutes of it...and that's definitely not "vent"...guess he's not on your list any more. |

PS. Just so no one thinks I'm "going on the war path" here...I'm trying to bring up very valid points....the entertainment business, as many here know, has few definitive fences or "categories" when it comes to artists and their art. No "starting a feud" thoughts intended...

Chris,
No feuds here. I didn't read that into any of the comments above. My apologies if I said something that didn't sound right. If someone considers themselves a vent, promotes they do ventriloquism and is earning a full time living as a performer, I would think they qualify. I throw in a magic trick once and a while, Ken Groves does a balloon Harley motorcycle, so by the definition you understood we wouldn't qualify either. I just wanted to see if Jeff was wrong about his estimate of full time ventriloquists. Just trying to get an idea of who actually earned their living with it, vs. had other means to support themselves and did it as an extra income. Tom |

Very cool, Tom, and no offense taken! Sorry if I did read anything into your comments, I wasn't trying to, but the variety thing came to mind so I had to post as "Devil's Advocate" just to add to the discussion. It's a great post, BTW, and a great thing to discuss. Count me in on your list...also, my friend Sandi Sylver is a great Chicago vent, and last I heard from her she's keeping busy...count her on the list as well.
Again, not trying to stir the pot as you know..but marketing wise, what Jeff said could actually work for the rest of us. If people love vent, then if they THINK there are fewer of us, when they find us, they'll call feeling lucky they found us. If they think there are too many of us, or at least a lot, then it may become "oh, yeah, ventriloquist..they're a dime a dozen" and it hurts demand and market perception (hopefully I'm using that term correctly). |

At the moment my Childrens act has three vent spots in in. I would like to add more. Does anyone think I would get more bookings if I promoted my self as a Vent who did some magic or a Magician who does some vent?

Chris,
An excellent point on the marketing. I agree completely - let the clients think that! Colin, I'd suggest looking at your market. How many magicians are there? How many ventriloquists? Personally I found the switch to be a very positive thing for my business. |

Colin,
IMO, you can promote yourself however you wish--BUT the thing is, you have to be THE BEST in what you promote you are in your area of business. If you say you are a vent whoe does magic--then be the best vent who does magic. Or otherwise. Make a niche and be the best in your field. I know you are a very good entertainer, so you can do it! All the best! |

Well out here in California, count myself, Dr. Solar and his Suitcase Scalawags as actively working the boards.
