Magic on a vertical plane is still good to practice. I haven't done a matrix / reverse matrix routine for a long time, but took it up again as additional material for regulars who have seen my horizontal material already.
Your regulars are some of your best fans, they give you the space and their time and attention - they are a good audience for those close up routines that you can't use in an everyday table-side or strolling situations, so don't be so quick to throw out the material that requires a mat. But do like Mary points out, keep your head up and talk to THE AUDIENCE not the table! That was a great observation Mary, thanks. And your right Nash, I think most magicians are on a quest for more good horizontal material; or converting material to play at chest height, out of the pockets with no table required. I still call it "close up" magic though. |

In no way disagreeing with what has been offered here, but in support of 'practicing' close-up -- I have performed thousands of effects with business owners in an office, sometimes with a desk corner in between, sometimes knees to knees -- and using only "found" objects. Without my limited 'close-up' skills I could not have done this, and know that hundreds of sale 'closing' resulted from my being able to drive a point home using magic for illustration, example or just getting attention. The point is you never know when you are going to "close-up."

I agree that for very large tables stuff on a horizontal plane with the tabletop typically doesn't work well. But at my restaurant gigs, the vast majority of the tables were 2-6 people.
My rope routine, finger ring and string/harness ring and rope stuff, linking rings, some of my coin routines, and much of my card work is done at around chest height. I can do a whole night with nothing but that material if need be. But there is also a lot of very strong magic (chop cup, coin routines, card routines and more) that can be done and is visible for smaller groups. With my Table Hopper's Friend, I'm able to do that kind of material taking up almost no table space. And there's another issue to consider regarding the chest high stuff. Yes, it's more visible to everyone at larger tables. It is a lot more visible to people at nearby tables. Very often, an entire section of the dining room watches me as I do, for example, my rope routine. So I'm not gonna do that same routine again at any of those tables. If I did everything at chest height, I'd have to bring a whole lot more stuff with me.

Hi,
it´s true, but it still shouldn´t allow for bad visibility and also shouldn´t allow for bad framing. we can continue this back and forth, but I guess there are to many possibilities and parameters to speak about everything. but if I have have to choose between visibility, and therefore best impact on the spectators or using effects that the spectators can´t see as good as possible, I would always choose the former - the more visible once. scott, I respect your writings very much, they always seem very thought out to me, but this, and i´m sorry that I have to say that, could allow lazyness by a reader. what do I mean by that? I have a lot of routines in my head that play more on horizontal level and could easyly be adapted to play on a vertical level. I think you know that and probably practice that as well as often as you recognice it, but maybe also not everywhere as I do and it even wouldn´t contradict what you have said about beeing seen by other tables. for exemple it is possible to play copper-silver-brass verticaly and it makes it more visible and clear and wouldn´t contradict your position. btw, I don´t know your routine. anyway, it is really to complex to throw light in every single corner of this topic. in respect, rené |

Nash, you are right, to a degree, however, I think it is all FAR from wasted.
You would not be a fraction of the performer you are now had you not worked on all of those other routines. I am CONSTANTLY working on crazy ideas, and impractical (for walk around/parlor) material, but it is GREAT exercise. Just as an Olympic swimmer is only swimming in competitions, that is FAR from the only thing they do when they train. They will never use weight lifting in any of their "professional gigs" (competitions.) ALSO, as Guy Hollingworth mentions in his book when disusing Reformation, he initially developed that, along with many other routines he does, just because, never intending to actually use them for real performances, but eventually, they would slip into his repertoire every now and then. In other words, all those crazy, or "useless" routines and moves may eventually produce something you WILL use, and even if they don't, the promote different thinking which WILL produce material you will use. At least that's how I justify the countless wasted hours I've spent, alone, with a deck of cards, all by my self, busting my knuckles, with no one to talk to, working on . . . oh god, I am so lonely

Great point about the "training," gdw. I am always practicing stuff that I don't do as part of my professional gigs. Sometimes that stuff eventually gets air time, other times its just part of my training.
