I started working at a bar a little over a month ago doing table hopping. It's a nice bar and when you go through some doors there is a nightclub attached. The manager is awesome and basically lets me do whatever I want. Its a sweet gig. But today I found out there will be a new GM coming in because he is being transferred. I didn't even think that sort of thing was possible considering it isn't a corporate owned bar.
I'm going home for Thankgiving break (it's a college town) and when I get back there will be a new manager. The old GM is putting in a good word for me. Lately it seems like anyone who gets a new GM eventually loses their job. Anyone ever run into a similar situation? Obviously I have to simply meet him and reassure him the entertainment is worth it, I'm just looking for tips. Thanks! |

If you're just looking for tips you should finish your set by borrowing a bill . . . .

David,
WELCOME to the world of Restaurant and Bar Magic. I have worked at places for several years and then a change in owner or manager occurs, and I lose my job the day after they take over. In short...IT SUCKS! But it is a fact of life in our business. One of three things could happen: 1. Nothing changes. The new guy comes in and loves the idea of you being there sight unseen. Everything continues on as it has... 2. The new guy will want to speak with you and in a sense, you'll need to "re-pitch" the restaurant. The good news is that you've already been there and should by now have an established fan base (let's hope) that you can use as leverage. 3. Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya! Good luck with it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya... Christopher

Presuming this place has regulars?
get them all to put a word in as well, a good gm listens to his customers
when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth

Is there any way you can find out WHY the old GM was trasferred?
1. He does a great job and needs to go to another restaurant to straighten it out. 2. He did a lousy job and a new GM is coming in to clean up his mess. Knowing which of these scenarios is true should help you with your pitch. In fact, if the old GM is being transferred to a location not too far from your current gig, you could potentially end up with a gig at the new location too. Just trying to think positive here... |

Did the owner hire you or the old manager? if it was the owner, you are safe but if it was the manager then it is risky.

If the old manager can share some cold hard numbers about the profits with the new GM, then it might be a good idea. Good magicians often increase the profits of a business. If the new GM sees those, it would be bad business practice to kick you out.

I strongly agree with DDecae, Find out where the other GM has gone, if they have taken over another restaurant/club they may need you there. Always keep in touch with the people who are leaving to go to another job, if they saw good sense in hiring you the first time then they will gladly recommend you at their new job. I have lost count how many times this has happened to me, but it's amazing how I have 'clawed' back some superb gigs from knowing where the GM went. Best Wayne |

The old manager went to a different state to a different bar that the same owner has. So switching bars is a bit out of the question. But, I just talked to the new management and all is well. I was given a good recommendation, I made my case for having magic, and even the bartender made a point to say how much all of the customers love watching the magic. Thanks guys
