No opinion here. I won't push my view first. Read away.

LOL both blogs are rather hyperbolic. I especially like James Delingpole's "The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW; aka ManBearPig) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed..." Like many anti-science bloggers he seems to think that all evidence fits into a very small portfolio. Even if everything East Anglia has is bad, it hardly touches the data around the world. This is just too rich.
I'm looking forward to a thorough analysis of the documents to see what they really say and mean. John, who really knows very little about climate science.

Of course, http://www.realclimate.org has already begun to respond to the hack:

I wish this Global Warming would stop it raining here for a while.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Ditto that, Tommy. This autumn has really been a depressing one so far. Hardly a dry day for weeks.

I don't blame (or credit) global warming, but there is no snow in Edmonton, and the temperature has been 5-10C above average. It's nice.

The upside of all this?
One side of the political arena will suddenly, and briefly, express a newfound concern about the ethics of hacking. |

I've never believed in the global warming anyway. But I will say I'm not sure I believe any hackers got in to the computers as claimed either.
You can't always believe what is posted on a blog or anywhere for that matter really. The main reason I don't believe in the hacking story is it isn't in this morning's paper at all or a couple of other places I have looked so what does that tell you? tha O.k. I just looked and there are more reports of this happening but I'm still not sure. Maybe just a big hoax as well to get people riled up on the subject more either way. |

UEA has already acknowledged a successful hacking of their CRU computers. Why would they support the hacker's claim if it was false?

I had to laugh at the Real Climate response:
Quote:
Since emails are normally intended to be private, people writing them are, shall we say, somewhat freer in expressing themselves than they would in a public statement. Yep - they more freely share data than they do with people who request it under FOIA, they share their tricks for manipulating data...(Hey, I'm just following Real Climate's implied assumption that these e-mails are real) Quote:
More interesting is what is not contained in the emails. Look elsewhere! Over here! It's shiny! Ignore those e-mails behind the curtain! Quote:
There is no evidence of any worldwide conspiracy, no mention of George Soros nefariously funding climate research, no grand plan to ‘get rid of the MWP’, no admission that global warming is a hoax, no evidence of the falsifying of data, and no ‘marching orders’ from our socialist/communist/vegetarian overlords. There's also no history of the country of Andorra or reviews of Tom Hanks movies. Your point? Quote:
Instead, there is a peek into how scientists actually interact and the conflicts show that the community is a far cry from the monolith that is sometimes imagined. Or, for that matter, the monolith-like "consensus" in which they want you to believe, despite the fact that consensus has never been a part of the scientific method. |

Are you serious Scott? Do you say things in private emails that you don't publish privately? Doesn't everybody? And what's this FOIA? You are aware that Great Britain is not bound by US laws, aren't you?
As for you final two "points"--if that's what they are intended to be. Are you claiming that there is a worldwide conspiracy amongst climate scientists? As for your final "point"-are you agreeing with the writer or not? Who are "they"--part of the conspiracy? Very vague rhetoric, Scott. John

I think perhaps at the very least it should prove that much further investigation is needed before any action is taken. I am not saying it is or is not happening (warming not the hacking) but I am saying that the ALARM BELLS can perhaps be stopped.
