In reviewing Jerry Andrus' Zone Zero, I have yet to understand why the hole in the card is off center. I have reviewed the DVD several times but have yet heard why the hole is off center. Maybe I am missing something, but is it because of the placement of where your hands are at the top of the board? I made one with some foamcore with the hole in the center and have no problem with the "move".
Any comments with anyone's experience would be appreciated. David |

I would hazard a guess that by increasing the distance of the hands to the ball it will help cancel out the method to an astute audience.

Agreed. The placement does help from reconstruction. Jerry Andrus was a smart guy. He did it on purpose I promise you.

Take a look at John Carney's handling on his video "Up Close And Far Away". The hole is at one end and it's extremely deceptive in his hands.

I've got Marc Desouza's new DVD which includes his twist on zone zero and it looks like the hole is in the center of the board but I'll take a closer look.

Hi Darkwing,
I think is not only helps to keep the method as deceptive as possible, it also helps with some of the more tricky angles when you're on a raised platform, and gives you a few inches more cover. I have considered putting stretch fabric over the hole with a slit to enhance that effect even more, and whatever pattern you use on your board could be continued over the hole that way. Walt |

Walt,
Sometime I can't see forrest because of all the trees. Duh!!! Now that you point that out, I can see the reasoning. Stucky, you are right Jerry Andrus was a gift to the magic world. By the way Walt, it is great to see you on the Magic Café again. It has been too long. |

This is a great effect and fortunately not many use it to advantage. I have had some interesting ideas combining the zone with a topit too!
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Saw a video on YT of someone who holds the board flat and the ball falls out of the hole.

I had an idea for one that is white, have it illustrated with a street on both sides and the "hole" becomes the solution to parking. Use a toy car.

That sounds neat Charlie.
No link offhand. Try doing a search maybe? I'll see if I can find it. Out of curiosity, was zone zero Adrus' original idea outright or an improvement on something out of say.... Tarbell?

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of adding this but the place I'm performing in will have people on both sides as well as in front of me. Will I still be able to perform it? Thanks in advance.

No, the angles are quite tricky with this piece.
You can't have people directly on either side, you need your audience seated in front of you. And it works best in a theatre/stage setting. Just to let you know so you don't spend money and find you can't use it, in all the venues you want to. Magically, Walt |

Where he grew up there were no magic shops and I believe he said nothing in his local library if his town had one. Of course there wasn't the Internet or YouTube, so he created all his magic from his own fertile mind. I believe he grew up in the state of Oregon. Without access to information, it is very hard to grow one's interest. As a young boy, I purchased all my magic from a local magic shop. The owner did not let it be known that there were other places that sold magic, until one day, he let it slip that there was a magic magazine by a company called Abbott's. Inquiring further, I found out that they not only published a magazine, but made magic props. The magic company was only a 2-1/2 hour drive from my city. That is when the whole world of magic opened up for me. They also had a yearly event where you could see magic acts from around the world. That 1st trip in my 1st car, with my mom was an exciting adventure, having never left the city before. I believe I was 17 years old, heading out on the highways to a place I have never been before, called Colon, Michigan. There were no super Highways yet in our state so the only route was 2 lane highways. Had to change road routes 3 times to get there. Luckily, it was not scary as my family use to take Sunday drives in Northern Indiana and stop for picnics along the highway. |

Correct you are, Stucky.
I performed Zone Zero, after buying Jerry Andrus' 3 Volume VHS set, so many years ago. I had a plastics manufacturer in Fort Myers Florida, make me one out of black plexiglas, and I used a glow-in-the-dark juggling ball (I had to buy a set of FOUR, LOL!) in place of the little yellow ball. After I practiced Zone Zero for about a year, I tried it out on the U.P.S. guy, when he came to the door... |
