Ladies and gentlemen, I present The Lyre Bird. Worth a listen if you haven't heard.

My favourite is the Pileated Woodpecker.
We moved to the country about 6 or 7 years ago and our house is in a wooded area. I would hear the strangest sound sometimes. It sounded like a jungle animal. Finally tracked it down and found it to be the woodpecker. Turns out a lot of early jungle movies used its call for jungle background noise and hence my confusion. |

Another Australian bird with a good song, the whip bird.
Not a virtuoso like the lyre bird, but I like it.

I am curious why being able to mimic songs and sounds is adaptive. Maybe it helps attract a mate within the species? Anyone have any ideas?

Bird songs also declare territory to others of the same species--so perhaps if a bird can mimic another, then it can keep possible food competitors out of the way. Just a guess.

Hey that's a good guess, I like that. It would mean the mimicry was adaptive for both finding food and finding a mate, because a larger territory means an easier time finding mates I believe.

From the actual clip Sir David says;
"To encourage female birds to come close and admire his plummage he sings the most complex song he can manage and he does that by copying all of the other songs he can hear around him" Sort of answers your question |

Kind of, I suppose. So the female bird is attracted to complex songs? Not sure why that would be adaptive.
