Considering how many single trick DVDs sell for $30, I'm impressed with a 10 trick DVD, that's over 3 hours long, selling for only $25. And based on the reviews, the material is strong, which in turn equals a great value for us.
Well done.

Locked in a Room Without Coins DVD – Craig Petty
Thank you VERY MUCH, Craig Petty! Because of your DVD cover art, I will be having nightmares for the foreseeable future. Kidding aside, this is probably the scariest cover to a magic DVD I’ve ever seen. It’s obviously a parody of the classic scene from The Shining, but even so I was startled seeing Craig’s mug when opening the DVD mailer. I was very fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this from Craig, but my advanced copy only arrived a day or two in advance of the full release, and also just in time for me to move into a new house and get right into the busy Christmas season. Hence, why I have wanted to review this for a while but have not until right now… This is apparently what happens when you take Craig’s coins away. This is a DVD full of card tricks with MOSTLY a regular deck, which is (more often than not) a shuffled deck in use (my favorite). Only a few tricks will require an advanced setup. Most are ready to go at a moment’s notice, or perhaps cutting one card to the top prior to starting (I think I can handle that…maybe). If I can find a DVD that has one item that I will do, that DVD is a good value to me. This one has already been put into that category because I’ve already performed one of the routines (Double Sandwich) for actual spectators (they really do exist!) and there are a few others (Monster Opener and Essence Deal) that I plan on testing out soon as well. Some of the overall positives: -Performances are live in front of an audience, not in a studio and you get to see real reactions. Some are done while the group is sitting, some are done with a table present and this is great for seeing how the routines can be handled in the “real world.” - Many routines are from a shuffled deck in use and some are immediate resets and require no table. All huge requirements for me. Negatives: -Due to the fact that this is not done in the studio, sometime the lighting could be better, but you take the good with the bad. I’ll take real performances over studio performances any day. - Sometimes the sound “clipped” or maxed out and became distorted (perhaps when Craig got particularly animated during a performance). This doesn’t drastically affect the DVD, just a production issue worth mentioning. Bottom line, there’s some great items on this DVD. If you’re a fan of shuffled deck in use, with no or minimal reset, this DVD is worth a look. Want a further look at my thoughts on the contents? Doubtful. Regardless, here they are: Lance Burton Appreciation Trick – In this routine, four Aces change to a signed selection, one-at-a-time. If you’re familiar with Craig’s past card work, the core of the routine is similar to Craig’s Mystique off of his Blank DVD, as he mentions during the explanation. The main advantage this has over the previous release is the ending: the selection is found under the spectator’s watch. Also, since it doesn’t use blank cards, it can be done without special cards, but by sacrificing the blank cards, you lose the ability to do some very clean displays of the cards change to the signed duplicates. Double Sandwich – I really enjoyed this routine. With just a few sleights, this routine can be added to the repertoire of someone with at least intermediate skill level. It’s a sandwich routine, where a four of a kind is removed (Queens), and the red Queens are given to one spectator and the black Queens to another. Each spectator also selects a card and they are returned to the pack. Using one of the pairs of Queens, the magician finds the first spectator’s card. The Queens and the selection are returned to the first spectator and the second pair of Queens is taken from the other spectator. These Queens vanish into the pack, one-at-a-time. They both return to the top of the pack and there a card between them. However, when it is revealed, it is found to be the first spectator’s card again! The second spectator’s card is with the first spectator! What I love about this routine is that it can be done standing with no table (as Craig does in his performance). There’s no setup and it’s fairly easy (minimal sleights). Photogenic – Using the two Kings and a piece of “photographic paper” (an unknown playing card), the magician takes a magical photo of a signed selection, while the selection is buried in the pack, between the spectator’s hands. However, in the course of taking this photo, the magician accidently takes a photo of every card in the deck and when he turns over the 2 Kings, they have changed to a card that has all 52 playing cards on it. The spectator left holding the deck discovers that these cards have stolen the images from the deck and it is now all blank. From the explanation, it is evident that this routine was originally slated to be released as a separate item. Since it was included on the DVD, you will need to gather few readily available gaffs. This is a great performance piece that can be done standing with no table. It is not an instant reset, but you should be able to reset the deck in a few moments while walking to your next group. Essence Deal – Possibly the most commercial item on the DVD. The magician offers to do a trick twice: once at speed and once slowed down. The first time, a card is chosen and the ink on the face of the card is removed and only a blank faced card remains. The ink jumps back on, ending the first demonstration. The second time, the ink is slowly extracted leaving the magician with a blank playing card and a piece of balled up paper with the card printed on it. The piece of paper is lit and in a ball of flaming fury, the ink jumps back to the blank card while it is in the spectator’s hand. EZ Waltzer – A version of Anniversary Waltz w/ no gaffs. One spectator signs the face of a card and the other signs the back. This has the feeling of the traditional routine, where the spectators find each other’s cards and then at the end, the two signed cards fuse together. Personally, I prefer Matthew Dowden’s handling of a gaffed Anniversary Waltz from his Party Animal DVD, but if you’re ever in need of doing a special trick for a couple and don’t have two gaffed cards, this would be a great routine to have at your disposal. Pickpocket – Anyone who performs strolling magic at some point or other has had spectators make jokes to the effect of “hang onto your wallets” or “guard your valuables”. The conversation at times can drift towards the topic of pickpocketing. This is a fun, light-hearted routine to do when these topics come up during a set (or when you guide the conversation there yourself). In this routine, you cause a signed card to vanish from one spectator’s wallet and appear in the wallet that is in the pocket of another spectator in the context of picketpocketing. Shoeperman – One theme I’ve noticed across some of Craig’s work: the spectator as the magician. This is routine is an example. Another is “Empowerment” on his Flipped Out DVD, where the spectator plays the part of the magician in a coins across routine (super clever and bold use of a Flipper Coin). At the core, this is a multiple selection routine. How this is different: the spectator “produces” the cards from various places at this body: top jacket pocket, under his watch and in the spectator’s shoe. There’s no pre-show or stooging; all of the cards are loaded onto the spectator. The Marker – This is Craig’s take on a classic plot. However, in its predecessors, such as Elmsley’s Between the Palms and Hamman’s Your Signed Card, an unknown card that is placed to the side and later revealed to be the signed selection. In Craig’s the card placed to the side is an IOU signed by the spectator. This card later changes into another spectator’s signed selection and the Marker (IOU) is found in the magician’s wallet. For me, this doesn’t advance the original plot to any new places. In my opinion, the addition of blank cards and another gaff add extra prop management/reset time, and I’d rather use only a regular pack when the effects are equivalent. Monster Opener – This starts like a multiple selection routine, goes to a “Wild Card” type effect (like Goldstein’s Masque where a Joker changes to each of the spectator’s selections), morphs to a card to pocket and then ends with a kicker production which brings it to another level than “just a card trick”. That may sound complex, but the routine flows. My only complaint about this routine is when the second card goes to the pocket, you’re very “dirty” when you go to the pocket. I think by modifying the structure and the body movements, you could do the “dirty” work on an off-beat, such as turning your body to give the spectator’s a full view when removing the first card from the pocket. I’m being intentionally vague here because I do not want to tip the method, so I apologize if this does not make sense to those who have yet to purchase the DVD. All in all, this is a great routine and I intend to try this one out with just a few modifications. Sandwich with a Kick – Believe it or not, this is a sandwich routine that ends with a kick. The kick is very similar to the kicker ending of Monster Opener. So unless you’re doing some sort of running gag, you’re probably not going to do both of these routines in the same set. The core of the routine, which is the sandwich is similar to Craig’s Speed Camera Cards from his Blank DVD, but of course, this one is done without blank cards and can be done with a shuffled deck in use. The kicker ending in this one is entirely different from the Blank DVD. --------------------------------------------------------------------- That should be everything you need to know. By now, you have already purchased or are about to go purchase the DVD, and to that I say, “It’s about time.” |

I am rather lazy so will just second Adam Hince's excellent detailed review. I do not know Mr. Petty and I will go one further and say that at least on the DVD I do not find him as engaging as some of his fellow DVD producing magicians from England. I found the audience responses to be quite muted, perhaps an honest reflection of multiple takes. All this is to say I was not swayed by screaming swearing, drunken Las Vegas Blvd crowds and I still thought that this was a DVD of usable, practical, doable, commercial material. I have already used "The Marker" with success although I was not familiar with its predecessors as Adam pointed out. At any rate, I would say a worthwhile purchase and a reasonable value in this day of single trick DVDs.

Anyone have any luck locating the flash paper used in Essence Deal from a U.S. magic dealer?
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Craig- I want to say thanks for the material. As you said- "there is something on this DVD for everybody".For this price- $25- I think it's WELL WORTH it! I enjoy a lot of your effects you put out. The only one I have a problem with is Quarentine (spelling?) only because the shr&^$%k w*#$p on my deck of cards ripped and now I cannot do the trick. Maybe I could take it somewhere such as a deli to re-do this? Anyway- I enjoy your magic- keep it coming!

Like I said, someone else tipped me on this.
I had seen this stuff in the past but never connected the dots. Anywho, Craig Petty is one of my favorite magicians, very creative thinking.

Thanks for all your feedback guys. I think that sometimes this DVD gets overlooked because it is just card material but IMO there is some really strong workable stuff on there.
Regarding the Easter Egg. There was Triumph routine slated to be on the DVD but got cut at the last minute sue to space. A lot of people have said that it is one of the best card routines I have ever created and it is getting a bit of an underground following (especially as I have been teaching it in lectures). The good news is that the routine will be on my next card DVD which should be out later this year. I hope this answers all your questions and thanks once again for your support Craig |
