Meaning that it looks like a Magic or Mentalism Show but all effects are achieved by Hypnosis.
Example is the Heavy Not Heavy Routine with any object onstage. Anyone experienced in doing this?

No from me at least.
I imagine there would be difficulties. Either you would have to do a quick induction on every volunteer, which would get tedious, or you would have to bring a few people on stage, do a mass induction, and use those as your volunteers, in which case you have a regular hypnosis show with a magic theme, not a hypnosis show presented as magic. Maybe it might stretch someone's creativity to play with this.

To me mentalism and hypnosis are presented as one. Mentalism is about reading and manipulating the mind and hypnosis is an aspect of this.
~If you are going to the bother of using hypnosis why would you see heavy and light as a main effect? So much more can be done with hypnosis. I don't see why anyone would want to be creative with this. Unless of course you meld mentalism with hypnosis which is what I would do. I find that many audiences in bars hotels etc are too noisy for "mentalism" they want a hard hitting show. They want a good laugh. They would find a heavy and light routine boring unless it was part of a fast paced show. |

Respectfully, Pakar, this makes little sense to me.
What you're proposing is to somehow, in the middle of a show, hypnotize someone (while nobody can see you?) and then doing the light/heavy box? First, if people see you hypnotize the person it is no longer magic, it's hypnosis. Second, if you pick a person who doesn't easily go into trance, you can't do the effect. That's why in hypnosis shows, people are dismissed from the stage or selected by the hypnotist after s/he observes them following instructions. I just find this highly impractical. HOWEVER, it is not uncommon to find people who are easy to influence. You can say something and they'll do it without needing any sort of hypnosis. I would suggest (no pun intended) that if you find a person such as this that you can make use of him/her on an impromptu basis. For example, you could throw in that they are glued to their chair and cannot rise or it's a shock chair and when they feel a shock they'll jump out of the chair. Note that these are impromptu additions, not planned as part of all shows. If you find someone who is this easy to influence, and there happens to be a cardboard box around, you could try the light/heavy box routine. However, if you want to use that routine in every show, get a light/heavy box. |

Look into the hundreds of effects that SUPPOSEDLY use it.
I think the idea is pretty lame actually.

Thanks for the replies.
I guess cultural differences come into play here because here in Malaysia(and most of South East Asia), Magic has always been thought of as Hypnosis (or Trance induced by Mysticism). So, actually showing the Induction to the Audience plays like "you're showing the Secret Spell" to them... Just so you know, I've tried this the last few years and it works like a charm (pun intended) here in Malaysia... They love to believe that Copperfield uses Trance or Hypnosis to do his Magic, so I "oblige" by showing them the "spells"... Really... The Heavy Not Heavy Skit was just an example, I didn't mean it to be THE routine of the Show. Anyway, just thought someone else had similar experiences,I guess I'll just keep on keeping on then...

I performed a twenty minute magic show in a tea house in Nepal, high up in the Himilayas. At the end one of the Nepalese in the group, a very intelligent man, took me aside and explained that he knew how I had done it all.
Knowing how sharp this guy was (he was a walking encyclopedia) I was interested to know what he had spotted. "You hypnotised us all - well done," he said. I did not realise that Pakar Ilusi was based in South East Asia, and perhaps the culture is very different there. I know I tried to do a hypnosis show on a group of Philipinos once, with very poor results. So I switched to magic and did a full magic show, which they loved. And no one questioned afterwards why no one was hypnotised. It was almost as if I had given them the show they expected.

I do present hypnosis and mentalism on the same show, but I don’t sell hypnosis as magic because I think that then the audience might think it is not real.
On the other hand, selling hypnosis as it is, and saying at the same time that mentalism is an illusion, I have had many people believing mentalism was as real as hypnosis, even though I said it was jus entertaining. Therefore, I think hypnosis has a very powerful effect on marketing. In the end, in terms of marketing, I think it is very important how you market your show before and during the show, because it is a product that you are positioning in the minds of the public. Giovanni, if mentalism is performed well people will think it is real no matter what you say or do.

I know dmkraig, but my point was actually that in those particular shows I was saying that mentalism is an illusion just like magic. Basically because I did not want people to believe I was a psychic or that I had special powers. Because, I have had in the past people willing me to cure their illnesses and problems because they believed I had powers.
But the result was that after a few great effects of mentalism and a hypnosis grand finale people thought everything was real. Best regards, Giovanni. |

Unfortunately, Giovanni, people will still believe no matter how much you deny it. People still want to be touched by members of Royalty because they think the "Royal Touch" will cure them of scrofula or some other disease. No wonder royals don't want to be touched!

You are right dmkraig!
That’s why I try to say sometimes that mentalism is just entertainment, even though it might not work. About three months ago I did a few mentalism effects twice on a national TV channel here in Ecuado. And, I thought I was going to get many contracts from that, but instead I received the weirdest phone calls from people in deep trouble that wanted to get better, like criminals and alcoholics. And even though I do hypnotherapy sometimes, I just decided not to do any at that time. Giovanni. |

I understand, Giovani.
Once I gave a fake seance for a friend's part. The invitation clearly stated it would be a FAKE seance. I told everyone that this was the way people experienced seances but was NOT real. No spirits would be contacted. Still, after the seance, a few people went around the house, opening windows. I asked why and was mostly told, "You know..." Finally, one person said it was to allow the spirits to leave. |

I have often found that 'some' in every audience come up with some utter nonsense and refuse point blank to change there mind: It matters not if you are doing a magic trick, mentalism or hypnosis.
In every hypnosis show that I have been to, there always seems to be one in the audience that tells everyone else that those people were stooges or just pretending - And at magic shows you have the same bloke using the same excuse for everything! It makes you wonder that if someone thinks they know it all and obviously don't enjoy that sort of thing, why they pay out of a ticket and turn up. Equally you always seem to have someone who just wants to believe in some real mystic force and they then just apply their own beliefs to whatever act they see. There is nothing wrong with them doing that but some people are scary how they live their lives.

Some major belief systems cannot accept Magic, Mentalism or Hypnotism, period.
It all falls under Witchcraft. People are still being killed because of it in some parts of the world, that are not remote at all. I'll leave it at that.
