Prof. Snape didn't have a beard nor did The Wizard in The Muppet's Wizard of Oz.
Just a matter of comfort and presentation.

I think a wizard can look however they want to look. I mean come on ...they're are a wizard, are YOU going to tell a wizard he needs a robe and a beard? He might turn you into a frog or something!!!!!!!
Obviously I was kidding, but a wizard isn't exactly a real thing (well, some people do call themselves wizards, but they usually dress normally). so you can't really say what a wizard has to wear. The robe and beard is one type of popular wizard, as mentioned above most of the male Harry Potter characters do not have beards and they are called wizard. Merlin, in the Excalibur movie, only had a goatee. The wizard of Oz didn't have a beard, elven wizards don't have beards. I figure if it's your character you get to decide. I think it depends on what reaction your trying to get and what feeling your trying to give, but I think if you wanted to go the "traditional" wizard way, and had a big robe and staff and maybe a big grimoire or cauldron then you wouldn't need a beard. I think Harry Potter is the "updated" wizard style.

In my effect "Mystery Woman", in The Wizards' Journal #4, I suggest what the well-dressed modern wizard wears. I won't even make you buy the e-Book for that part of it. Here it is as a Cyber Monday gift:
"Fashion Note: Night club Wizards dispense with robes except for certain effects where they lend credibility. The usual attire is a below-the-waist tunic of dark blue or purple, black slacks & shoes. A silver pentacle on a silver chain about the neck completes the ensemble. Feel free to ignore my fashion advice and wear what you like." OK, that's all the advice you get for free. To get the effect that goes with it, you'll have to pay, but since this is Cyber Monday, you get a discount on every Magic Nook published e-Book on my site until midnight tonight!
