Hi! I need some help with the Hummer/whirling card. Specifically the part that goes round your body! Been trying really hard but I just can't get the part around the body!
I'm getting pretty confused now as I can get it around 7 out of 10 times I try it, but just not every time... When I put on a jacket, it seems the "mechanics" or technique needs some further "work". I am confused now whether there are certain factors affecting the way to get it to spin one round around your body. Does speed of spin affect? Position of placement of wax? Length of I*? Angle of launch? Turning of head etc? I will catch the I* at the base between my thumb and index fnger first, then give it a push(sometimes I move my hand forward to lift the card higher before throwing out) with my right hand towards my left shoulder. The problem often occurs with the card hitting the back of my right shoulder or arm, or the IT brushing against the right shoulder too much as it swings around the back of my body. It gets worse if you put on a coat or jacket. Really frustrating Anyone can help? Sincerely appreciated! Dan |

I never had any problem. I never tried to get it to go around my body. My way was to use two cards glued together to give them weight. First I would toss it out just a bit and it would just come back and I'd grab it and return it to tope of deck. Then I would flik it off the top of the deck with my free hand's index fingernail. the card would sail out and I would ROTATE MY BODY like I was chasing it... and the key to sellig it is to catch it JUST BEFORE IT HITS THE FLOOR. You open fingers go out and run down the you know what to the card.

Thanks for your help guys!
I kind of got it! After trying 5 hrs every night for the past 5 nights!!!! (i cant beliv this...) It's really a kind of knack, kinda like riding a bike, hard to explain... I start off at one side of my body(45 deg to my right),tilt my body forward a little, launch it with a tight spin, catch very briefly then push it out 45deg outwards(to left) so it arcs widely and at the same time turn your head as it moves off. It needs to make bigger arc/circumference to clear your shoulder. Best done with a credit card or something similar with weight. Helps to use kevlar thread for confidence at first. Makes learning much easier in my opinion. Sometimes, I switch to a regular white string to see what goes wrong Helps to some extent. Cheers! Dan |

I can give some suggestions, but I don’t think this is right place to explain it. I would have to give too many cryptic messages and I will get confused. I will PM you to help you further.

AGAIN... the KEY is to catch it just before it hits the floor. Helps sell it.
Posted: Dec 4, 2009 1:23pm One of the old ideas was to have the necessary tied to a pair of glasses. You say this next trick is so cool I want to be able to see it. Put on glasses and you are set.

Al Faria's "Whirlaway Card" sold by Louis Tannen between 1968-1975 was in my opinion the best design.I have not seen it used again. It was too cool and only cost $2.00 back then.

If you adjust for inflation, it would be around $20 in today's money. About the same price Houdini's sells it for.

It will come with time. After awhile you won't need to sway at all. It will be so slight the audience won't even know you are doing it.
