Greetings fellow Magicians,
Just recently a Magician/Mentalism friend of mine performed some Mentalism for me that totally blew me away. He had this little notebook/pad of paper where he tore out a piece of paper, placed it on the face of the notebook and then proceeded to having me write down names, numbers, places, etc. He was even standing a good 10 feet away from me while I did this. Then he had me take that piece of paper and fold it up and place it into my pocket, or burn it, then I handed him the notebook pad of paper back to him. He never once came close to the piece of paper that I wrote on. After that, he correctly named everything that I wrote down which totally astounded me. Now I am just a beginner in Mentalism, so I know of all the ways other Mentalists gather information from a piece of paper. But with all those other methods, the Mentalist would ask for the piece of paper back, my Magician/Mentalism friend never did that. I was so amazed by this, that I involuntarily ask him how in the world he did that. He wouldn't tell me HOW he did it, all he said was, "Look for The Notebook by Kerry Summers". Believe me, I have searched high and low, countless websites, and could not find ANYTHING remotely that looked like The Notebook by Kerry Summers. So my question is this, am I doomed to never find this rare and amazing piece of Mentalism, or could someone possibly please point me in the right direction of where I can obtain this? I would be eternally grateful for any help with this, because even as I write this, I still cannot fathom how on earth he was able to perform such utterly, impossible Mentalism. |

This is actually a very common routine accomplished by many different ways.
I suggest you start with reading the 13 Steps to Mentalism. It will teach you how to do the above, plus MANY other great effects

I just recently placed an order for some other Magic items, so I don't quite have the full amount to buy the DVD set. But if it is worth it, then I can contain myself (or try at least, ha!)from buying anything else until I purchase the DVD's. Thanks for the help mmreed, I now feel like I'm on the right path to learn, practice, and perform Mentalism which I just absolutely love as much as close-up card magic. |

The 13 steps is a sort of reference work detailing methods and effects in all different forms of mentalism. If you intend to use it as such, I would recommend getting the book, because if you ever need to quickly look something up, it's easier to grab a book off the shelf and page through than to get a DVD out and find the right section in there.

Yep - get the book.
And the effect you describe is very common, and accompished by many different ways. With this being a public section, I don't want to disclose the method, but once you get into Corinda you will learn about how to do this a number of ways. The book will not spell out line by line, but instead gives you methods to apply to various situations. There are also MANY devices that will do this effect on the market. Tommy Pad, Universal Impression, ect. Unless you have a specific need, its best to just make your own.

You guys really are the best. Thank you all so very much for sharing such helpful advice, it truly means a lot to know that there are Magicians out there willing to help others who are starting a new field/genre of Magic.
Other than the 13 Steps of Mentalism, are there any other books I should be aware of for me to purchase in the future that will further help me tumble down the rabbit hole of Mentalism? |

Practical Mental Effects by Theo Anneman is a good one to get - and its low cost.
Prism by Max Maven is good once you get Corinda read. Try and stay away from the one-trick stuff. Stay with books that teach many methods instead of just effects. You learn a technique or method and you can create many effects. If you go to our site, sign up for our mailing list - we send out newsletters with unique and original magic/mentalism content often. It will help you stay up on whats current.

And I noticed that there are two books with the same title, but one is just with Theodore Annemann and then there's another one by Theodore Annemann as well as D. Robbins. Also, after reading the descriptions for both, I noticed that they both shared some similarities, and the same price as well. Anways, which of the two do you suggest I should pick up? Common sense tells me to buy the one with both Theo Anneman D. Robbins, but I would like to know if anyone who owns either of them, or both, and which one I should definitely buy. I also try to do my best by not buying either a book or DVD that only has maybe one or two effects. But with these books in particular, it is stated to have about 200 Mentalism Effects. Which sounds like a tremendous deal for only $12 dollars. After speaking with my friend who showed me the Mentalism effect utilizing The Note Book by Kerry Summers, sold me: Psychological Subtleties Volume 1 (which just so happens to be a first edition, first print) Psychological Subtleties Volume 2 (second addition, first printing) and even Psychological Subtleties Volume 3. He also blew me away when he also threw in Derren Brown's Pure Effect book along with Derren Brown's Absolute Magic. He could tell that I really showed a genuine interest for Mentalism, so since he just got married and have a baby on the way, he thought that I could learn lots and lots of valuable information from each book. So he sold me all 5 books for $250, which made me even more excited and stunned, cause I know some of those books are out of print and very rare books that sell for quite a lot if you were to buy each book one at a time. I was hoping he would sell me the Kerry Summers Notebook, but basically said he wanted to keep it, just incase, during any free time he might have, he still wants to perform with this when the time is right. I also visited your website and signed up with the mailing list, as well as making an account. So if you could find a way to keep me updated on new material, or any other Mentalism effects I should add to my collection to practice with, I truly would be eternally grateful for that kind of help. Thanks again for responding to my posts and help guide me into the field of Mentalism the right way. Also including to the others who were kind enough to answer my questions. So until next time, Happy Holidays! Oh, and one more question that I forgot to ask, would guys consider Tagged by Rich Ferguson a good mentalism effect? |

I think that Tagged would generally considered a magic effect, from the ad copy. But - human ingenuity knows no bounds, and it wouldn't surprise me too much if some clever mentalist respun it into a convincing mentalist effect. You could be that mentalist!
Glad you enjoyed the effect that you describe in your original post. You have the best advice in this thread: I have nothing to add except for - good luck, and I hope you too go on to totally astonish people with your work! |

Both Anneman books will give you what you need. They are both reprints of the classic. The DE Robbins one is a popular edition - but just snag the lowest cost one and dig into it - the info is the same for the most part.
