Hi Guys
A quick question for you. Do You Feel That Coin Unique Is Becoming Common Knowledge? I ask this because where I live in London there are 2 well known Magic Shops where a number of magicians gather one or twice a week in order to catch up and buy some magical goodies. And one thing that I have noticed over this year is that there has been a large increase (Several Times a day) in the number of people who appear to be non magicians coming in to the store and asking for that trick where you have two coins and one disappears or that coin trick that uses magnets to make one go inside the other (Or some other lay persons description of coin unique) This is great for the magic store as they sell more effects which means they can continue to stay open, which in turn is great for the magic community as a whole. So I'm not grumbling, it's just an observation that I have made and would love to hear your opinions. Thanks |

Could be that someone with a big mouth is exposing it a lot, could be that they're confusing another, very popular effect such as S&S with the one you're talking about.
I'd guess that the furor will die down soon. It's actually a pretty obscure effect in the greter scheme of things. ( BTW, naming it and describing it in the same post won't help matters at all. Now google has THAT in it's cache as well... Just sayin' )

Most magic tricks start-off with a bang and fizzle out eventually.
In the 70s, if you didn't have a Copentro, you weren't a magician. Ten years ago everyone was buying DVDs that taught how to levitate. There are very few effects that stand the test of time. We will always hear "Do you sell that trick with the thumb?" and a few others. If you wait a few years, you can fool people who have purchased that coin trick (mentioned above) as long as you change the presentation.

Thanks Jay, I totally understand what you are saying, it's just I sometimes wonder how people who are not really magicians know the workings of these effect. Oh yeah, I forgot youtube exposure is probably one of the biggest causes.

...as long as you change the presentation. Exactly. This is what we need to understand here. Even if all of our sleights are exposed (which I'm sure they are), it's still a matter of presentation. There's an almost infinite number of things that can be performed with our current knowledge on coin magic. Change the presentation, you change the entire trick to someone. It will never be too exposed. Even if it is, it's not the end. We'll come up with something new. |

Tis just one more great reason to do the "old" stuff from books!

Here in the States, I don't believe that Coin Unique is overexposed or even common knowledge. I use Coin Unique and I don't have any other close magician friends who do use it. When, during discussions of "shop talk," I use it and/or show it to them, (it's not exposure when shown to other PROFESSIONAL magicians who use similar items, are better than me and who help me develop new and unique ways to use the prop), they are always surprised to see it; as it is their first time.

I was going to Coin Unique at a show a few months ago.
When I brought it out, a lady said, "My husband has one of those." I changed what I was going to do with it and instead, did a coin through glass. I did a Bobo Switch for a real £ coin and then passed it out. When I had finished she said, "Sorry about that, my husband has something called coin unique." Worked for me.

Agreed, I know it's all about coming up with original presentations that even if a spectator has a particular effect like this, he will not realise. By the way nice story Tom, thanks for sharing.

We need to protect secrets as much as we can but in the end...PRESENTATION. Just watch Mike Finney do tv spots and not do a single bit of magic for 5 minutes and that's in this time of fast cut "mtv" TV!!

Coin Unique is very powerful. There is no limit as to the ways it can be presented. My theory has always been this: how would you like it presented to you in a way that you would be stunned. Then go out and do it that way to others.
