Hey everyone I have to ringneck doves. I am thinking about purchasing Dan Sperry's dvd. I heard recently that ringneck doves are not that easy to train as white doves. I was just wondering if this was true?
Thanks, Michael |

Michael, I think you want to know the difference between ringneck doves and Java doves. Java doves are smaller than ringnecks but they are not easy to come by. A lot of magicians use ringnecks. It takes about 6 weeks to train a dove regardless of the variety.

Michael,
I don't mean to contradict Dave by my following comments, but Java doves are a type of Ringneck. I think Dave was just pointing out the differences in appearance. They are in the same basic family, biologically. If you look closely at a Java dove you will see that the feathers around its neck have a different texture (hence, a white on white ring) and there is a light tan colored band on the underside of its tail feathers. A common Ringneck dove will have a tan colored body, (the shading will vary) and a black ring around its neck as well as a black band on the underside of its tail feathers. In fact, there are other color combinations of Ringnecks as well. Most Java doves are a little smaller than the common Ringneck since they are domesticated and, therefore, don't get as much exercise as a result of being caged. However, I did once have a female Java dove that was noticeably larger than its male counterparts.
Channing Pollack is my idea of the perfect magician. For those of you that have not seen him perform, I recommend trying to get hold of a video of an old movie called "European Nights" made about 1959.

Mike, that wasn't a contradiction however, in reference to your comment about ringnecks being tan colored, almost all of my doves are ringnecks and they are pure white. A few are pied and two are brown with a black ring. The black ring around the necks of the white ones is only visible on two of them. It's there but you have to ruffle the feathers to see it. They also do not have a black band on the tails.
There are 31 known colors of ringneck doves just for future reference.

Most white Java doves do have a vestigial ring around their necks. They are closely related to many other types of doves and pigeons. Each species of dove seems to have a different temperament. I have handled many of the brown ringneck doves. They have all seemed a bit 'too spicy' in comparison to white doves. The same has held true for the pied [speckled white and brown]. I find them both to be unpredictable, even when you spend lots of time taming and training. Keep in mind that there are always exceptions!
I had one beautiful pied dove that worked in my show for years, but I dreaded producing him because I never knew what he would do. Occasionally he would take off into the audience! I have not had this problem much with the white doves. I can 'rent' a totally unhandled white dove from a pet store [this is what I do when I am on the road] and have them totally calm and tame within a few minutes. After many years of performing, I can clearly state that I prefer working with white male SILKY doves onstage. Silkies seem to be the calmest dove of all. Silkies are great because, if spooked, they can only flutter a short distance and cannot actually fly. This is due to a natural genetic aberration that changes the structure of their feathers. Currently, I have a pair of white silky doves. As is with all doves, the male coos to the female after he is produced!
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

I have a ring neck with 4 white ones in the same cage, BIG ERROR, is the trouble maker, literally screams all day and when I try to practice with her is more rude.
Probably have a bad personality!
