I don't know if this one has been posted before. I think Glenn gives a wonderful performance. The routine is original. He is polished, and the ladies watching are obviously entertained and completely blown away by the finish.
Here's the link to Glenn's page. http://www.mrhypnotist.org/bishthemagishtheater.html You can find the routine as part of a longer video by clicking on the blue text that says: Glenn Bishop Performing Part Of His Close Up Show - Another Look At Rub A Dub Dub - And The Cups And Balls - At The World Famous Magic Castle! I mean no negativity to anyone, but I'd bet a dollar Glenn, his polished routine gets a better reaction than most others with their routines. I know he gets a better reaction than I do with my routine!! For contrast, you can see me all alone in my magic room, no pretty girls, no gig at the Magic Castle. By comparison, I'm feeling a little sorry for myself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t__UnSXmjvc KG |

Very commercial routine... just long enough and a solid finish.

I agree, Pete. Very solid performance of this classic.
Thanks for sharing it, Kent. Happy Holidays, guys.

I still think it's the best. I like it in its new dress as well (different from the Funshop). The only improvements that you could make are to have a movement rhythm that is less uniform (thinking along Armando Lucero's gesture) and a finale involving less expectable props than the big balls, even if the matching with the color of the small ones adds a layer of deception.
Maybe covering more distance with your feet in the Antonio Romero's style, that you are well aware of, would also demonstrate the life that is there when you give a live performance, but that the camera doesn't succeed conveying. If you come to the WMS in 2010, I'll bring you a new Kepplinger type of tool that I built, as a present that you may like to try and use. In my eyes, your routine is still on top and, as you know, I've seen a few.

Etienne,
I still have problems concentrating on the presentation. I am exploring new routines, as you know. You should consider Magic-Con. I will be there. I don't know if I can also make WMS. You should let us know what you think of Glenn's routine. That is why I started this thread. I thought the others here would like to see what I consider to be a journeyman magician's take on the effect. KG |

Glen's routine is well done. I really liked it and was entertained by it, regardless of whether or not I knew what was coming.
Kent, your version showcases the breaking of the rules and things that happen that are not supposed to happen. I'm not sure laymen would care to know or be entertained by that aspect of a cups routine. Also, the pacing is very slow to begin with, and add to that the emphasis on what is supposed to happen vs what IS happening makes the pacing even slower and more verbose. Your routine with the 3 different colors is certainly clever in many, many ways and darn impressive to magicians, but clever and impressive to magicians is not necessarily entertaining. Using the 3 different balls, I'd try to whittle the routine down to its bare essence and only do the phases necessary that demonstrate what can be done. Don't clutter the routine and complicate the plot. Regardless, your work in this area seems to be unmatched and is worth study. I'm glad you've done it. ... in my respectful opinion.

Frank,
Thanks for your inputs. I appreciate your taking the time to watch both routines. I posted Glenn's routine because I think it's a very commercial performance, and I thought y'all would dig it. I should not have put a link up to my own routine. It detracts from the discussion of Glenn's routine. That's what I was trying to fire up! I'm sorry you didn't find my routine entertaining. I'll work on it. KG |

Kent,
I tried to open it, but to no avail.

I have seen and studied Glenn's routine and presentation many years ago. His routine is definitely solid and must say... really commercial. Glen is also a true gentleman of magic. We used to exchange ideas as we communicated frequently. Growing up in a magical atmosphere really gave Glenn the best education in magic. While his cups and balls routine is wonderful...his knowledge and skill with a deck of cards is outstanding.
I wish Glenn all the best and hope he graces the threads in our Café again. It's been a while.

Kent,
I like your routine very much. Original. Slowly performed. Simple consistent premise. Easy to follow. Always a surprise. No confusing fast moves or razzle-dazzle deception. And, despite your protestations to the contrary, an entertaining presentation. Mike

Kent, what I love most about your routine is the pace. It just seems impossible that any sleight of hand can occur at that speed. Well done. If I may, I would like to also offer one very small criticism. Leaning on the table is unattractive: I think you lose a bit of your presentational elegance every time you lean forward onto the table.
Thank you for sharing your marvelous routine. John

Frank,
My only intent is to make good magic tricks up that have something of me in them. Some days I win, some days what I come up with is crap. It ain't nuthin' but some very old tricks! Hope to see you soon. KG |

Kent: Your routine is a true FOOLER... I think both lay and magical viewers are nailed... and that's what I like.
Glenn's is very solid, basic and to the point, and can be done anywhere with little or no prep. For me, NOW... I am concentrating on the Bowl Routine and the TWEEZERS effect. The latter, shown on http://www.petebiro.com fits me, in that the whole thing is in a little 4x6-inch bag and has TWO KICKER ENDINGS. It's probably because I have done the cups and balls for 30 or so years and was looking for something different (for me). Thanks for you work, and thanks for your postings.

Pete,
Thank you. Is there any footage of you doing the bowl routine? I'd plunge right into that one! I liked the tweezers effect. Hope I can make it to WMS this coming year. KG |
