Yep; the official diagnosis was "fracture, open; fingertip/laceration, open; fingertip". The unofficial report was "patient 'shredded' finger with router".
X-rays, stitches, and lots of gauze pads later, I found out I managed to get three severe cuts on my left middle finger, one deep enough to nick the bone. I've been shot up with antibiotics and a tetanus booster as a preventative measure, have a prescription for some of the good meds, and a two-day pass from work, which I will probably not use, unless those good meds really manage to do a number on me. (Yes, I am typing one-handed.) Please, no lectures on stupid human tricks in the workshop. I realize how stupid I was, because I absolutely know better and should not have done what I did. Considering I accidentally stuck my fingertip in a router moving at full speed, I feel incredibly lucky that I actually still have a fingertip. Moral of the story, go ahead and invest in that second push-stick. You'll probably want to use it eventually.

My grandfather worked as a blade sharpener in a sawmill his whole life. When he retired he cut off his fingers with a table saw. Years later when my dad retired, he was using a table saw and cut off his fingers as well. I'm afraid to retire. I may just go ahead and have my fingers amputated when I retire and save myself the trouble.
Sorry to head about your accident. OUCH about sums it up.

Ouch. Heal soon. Maybe this isn't the time to work on your card sleights

Fortunately, I don't do card tricks- but I probably won't be building any illusions for a while. And the mounting hardware for the new safety gate for my son (what I was working on when my finger slipped) may have to wait a bit, too.)

I feel your pain brother!
I tried to stop my band saw blade with my knuckle about 6-8 months ago and I'm just now getting full use of the digit again! I'm afraid it's a woodworkers curse of it not being IF you'll get hurt, it's more about WHEN and HOW BAD! Until my episode with the band saw other than splinters, smacking my mitts with a hammer and a few chunks of wood coming apart on the lathe, I had gone many years without incident! Don't even go out to the shop while on those meds! Heal well, MMc |

Power tools can sure change things fast.
My brother-in-law knows of a guy, who thought he'd trim his hedges with his lawnmower. He picked it up by the bottom edges, thinking there was some clearance from the blade. OOOps! I hope you heal well. And that you dropped a magnet in there before they sewed you up.

Thought I'd mention I shared the full story, complete with pictures from when I changed the bandages today, over in The Workshop forum, in hopes that others will learn from my experience and not have to make a similar trip to the E.R.
Sorry Josh- no magnets. Last thing I need is an implant rejection that close to the bone. If they need to go back in there when I get the follow-up done, I'll see if I can convince them to stick one in then.

Ouch. I once stuck my hand in an old metal fan. Yes one used to keep one cool in the summer. This was a very old fan. the fan guard had wide gaps in it none of the plastic blade and protective things fans have today. I was trying to move it a little further from My bed in the dark while on and whack! Thank god I had My fingers curled enough that it only cut into the tips of thumb first and second finger of right hand. First finger got the worst of it. But hand is fine finger gets a little stiff from time to time but that's it.

Heck of a way to start the new year.
Just reading about what happened makes me cringe. Things can only get better. Take those happy meds..... feel better John (acesover)

Thanks for all the well-wishes. To update, I saw the doctor for a recheck yesterday, and the wound is healing nicely. I'm leaving it exposed to air on doctor's advice, and should get the stitches out next Wednesday.
And actually, I haven't had to take any pain meds, much to my surprise, and pleasure. (They've apparently got some pretty bothersome side effects.) NUMS- I'll support your proposed law. Not only will it boost pushstick sales and strengthen our economy, but it will also be self-enforcing and not require any additional spending from our police force.

Good luck and I hope there is no permanent damage. The hands are very complex things and so hard to repair sometimes.
