In Cold Blood by Truman Capote : The true story of the murder of the Clutter family. I read it when I was around 16 and it bothered me for years.

Theres another one but I cant remember the name. It had to do with a possessed book that when read by anyone transported that person to a reality where they would get killed by a psycho nut job! Near the end the detectives figured out that the book was laced with Lsd. They of course then read the book(wearing rubber gloves so as not to get infected)only to discover They were wrong! And very much dead!

"Communion" by Whitley Strieber No this book has nothing to do with religion, it's a true story about a guy who is experimented on by aliens. One part tells how his wife would wake up every night to him screaming from the kitchen but she couldn't move out of bed. However it works she gets up one night and she sees him surrounded by 'aliens' who are doing experiments on him. I haven't even read the whole thing, just parts and makes my blood go cold! Yikes! (My description does not do the book justice!)
A few nights after I read some of this book the city police helicopter was roaming around outside with their spotlight! I woke up thinking it was aliens! Talk about influencing the mind! Cheers Dayle

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Not meant to be horror, but the thoughts of the future are incredibly scary.
They Cage the Animals at Night. not written well, not a horror, but scary how kids are treated and abused. makes me glad to have what I do. |

For those of you who mentioned "1984," the movie "V for Vendetta" appears to have drawn on it for a bit of inspiration. There's some Sparticus in there, too.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

When I first read ('70s) "The Late Great Planet Earth" by Hal Linsey I was frightened immensely. F.Paul Wilson's "The Keep" was a scary novel. This was one book that I read in it's entirety in one sitting because I couldn't put it down!
