Hay Guys / Gals - many time I would go to "google" - put in the full title (like- 'Abbott break apart production box '- and many others) - FULL Description - PICTURES -often where to get and prices- done this many times. And mentioned in various forums, many times - surprised it isn't tried more. Ralph ROUSSEAU (Russo)

Hi Russo,
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm very familiar with search engines and their workings. My question is more of a historical one. Was Blackstone's Break-Apart Production Box designed as a mirror box or Ka-Blammo Box or something else. I can't seem to find this information. Any insights would be helpful. |

Don't really know (at 84 - what do you expect, LOL). I still have Owen Brothers (Carl original- not Smith) 'Enchanted Rabbit Hutch' (mirror) and 'Rapid Rabbit Vanish' (break-a-way), cost us $25. each in 1960 - now worth $375, each - Ha Ha Ha

Good one! I also can't believe the cost of some of the small illusions on the market today, plastic versions will run you anywhere between 40-75 dollars and ones made out of wood or even metal go for astromical prices. Don't get me wrong I understand there are "secrets of the magic woodworking guild" (as Wooster would say), but there's an opportunity for small shop woodworkers and metal fabricators to make some good money.
On a side note, there's an Owen's Enchanted Rabbit Hutch on everyone's favorite aution site going for $2,000. Who knows what a vintage box would fetch right now in the right market. I digress, I still don't think its one of those designs you mentioned above, I think its a custom mirror box with break away sides. Of course there might be a name for this specific design, but I haven't found it yet. Thanks for the input |

Over the years,I've used a small mirror box at kids birthday parties. A utility box, can be used to restore, produce and vanish small objects.
One of my routine is with alphabets cards( the letters are of assorted colors) with a long piece of ribbon. The cards magically attached to the ribbon spelling happy birthday. Two sets are made up---pink ribbon for girls and blue for boys. Tricky Ricky |

My favorite versions of this type of prop have a hinged gaffus that drops down to the floor of the box upon releasing a catch, so you end with a very clean display of the box when you open it.
At one time I had the Owen Enchanted Rabbit Hutch and it was a very effective appearance. Another one that looks very good is made by Daytona Magic , called "In A Flash Appearance" . https://daytonamagic.com/shop/stage-magi......earance/ (there's a video demo if you click to the link) Here's what the Owen Enchanted Rabbit Hutch looks like when it is opened and the rabbit removed. Wow that is a nice transition with the Daytona Magic production box. I'm still looking for the plans or a reproduction of Blackstone’s Break-Apart Production Box. In this case all the sides fall down, not just the front.

I don't recall ever seeing any plans for this type of box , so I think you would have to look at the photos and backwards-engineer it. At least you have the photos to go by and the dimensions given on the auction site: 17 ½ x 14 x 11” . That's a start. Build a hinged box to those dimensions, then you'll have to fabricate a lid that fits over top of all (it's metal on the Blackstone box, but no reason I can see that the lid can't be wood. Finally , have a glass company cut the appropriate size thing. A lot of work for sure , but if you have the woodworking skills and tools , quite doable I think. |

While I'm not real keen on seeing this type of thing posted for public view on YouTube , I wanted to share this DIY project video that I saw recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPjCdd-5nZ4 A lot of people are not going to bother to sit through this meticulous DIY type of video , so I think the harm done by this is minimal. If you want to build one like this , he shows you step-by-step how to do it. You could adapt it to other proportions if you take some time to draw up plans. I also don't think I would use 1/2" or 3/4" boards as he appears to be using, but would make it lighter weight with 1/4" boards. I would use lighter weight m _ _ rored plexiglas (not glass) for the unseen thing. Honestly, if the prop doesn't have to be transported under real world show-biz conditions you could probably get good results using foam core covered in wood grain veneer or contact paper and make a simple wooden case built to size ,lined with foam to protect it while traveling. Foam core is very easy to cut with X-acto/Utility knife. You would need to add additional strips of foam core or balsa wood to strengthen the corners. (look up tutorials on making foam core props for techniques on reinforcing it . Things like this: https://oinksterrain.blogspot.com/2011/1......ics.html ) . |

For anyone else researching how to make this type of prop, here's another example of how it should look when shown to be empty.
This is an Owen Magic Supreme Duck Vanish. The handling here is a bit different. The animal is placed into the box though the top lid , then the box is rotated and we see that the box has no bottom ,and is empty. The presentation can involve doing this on a draped table , so the audience naturally has suspicions that the duck has gone through a trap door and is hidden underneath the draped table. Then the drape is removed , but no duck. A miracle. Owen's had a similar effect for a rabbit called The See-Through Bunny Box , but it had a sort of "break apart" feature. https://owenmagic.com/Livestock/livestock.html "a good-size rabbit fits easily into the box. There's no doubt he went in, but a second later, when you tip the box over, he's gone! So far, so good, though nothing new, but when you lift the box, the lid, top and side fall away permitting the audience to see clear through!" |
