When I was camp hopping I'd but a basket of objects on the the table, let the spectators prowl through and hand me objects to do magic with. Thus, I never asked for anything to be examined and also get audience involvement. Sometimes I'd ask, "do you see a brass coin with hole in there somewhere?" Then I'd ask for some other coins the same size -- and they would search and hand me a Mexican one and a half dollar. The I'd do CSB or some variation. No one ever had a problem identifying what object I asked for, or asked, "what's this for?" I was doing magic with 'their objects' and that's all that mattered.
They key is, for me, to give some legitimacy for having the objests in play. A story might work like the 'grandfather coins'. Try, "I used to do some magic with half dollars, but they are pretty hard to find these days, and quarters are too small to see. I have a couple of silver dollars from my dad's coin collection. Would it ne OK to use those -- can you see them all right? I only need three, would you please hold one for me -- any one, you choose. Thanks for keeping it safe." Just a thought.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst

I think that it depends on the situation.
In 'magician' mode I agree that it matters little which coins. Suspicion is always on magicians anyhow. In a more impromptu case some suspicion could arise if you used uncommon coins. Using borrowed coins and doing something amazing takes heat off. |

I find that using unusual looking coins adds interest.
