Hello Magicians!!
This is my first post on here and I am not sure if it is posted in the corrrect location. I manage a multi million dollar theater that is technically state of the art. Years ago, I used to travel with a large illusion show. I noticed when we would do 1-2 night gigs, we would BARELY have the time to rehearse in the facility before the curtian went up--therefore, the show was never 100% perfect. Without a perfect show, I never wanted to send out video recordings. I always wanted a theater avail to me for a few days to have time to set up, program lighting, add scenic effects, etc. Now that I am in the opposite position and run the theater of my dreams, the thought came to me--"Is there any interest/need for such a facility--and if so, would any illionist be willing to pay enough to obtain the theater for a period of time to get GREAT quality recordings?" That is my question to you. Being in a tourist town, we are dark for a portion of the year. I wonder if I could fill that time slot with private rentals of magicians looking for a facility to record in. Some of the details of the theater are--a 1,400 seat theater, the stage floor is built in sections allowing for a trap to be located anywhere, full trap room under stage, 60 intellegent lights and 100 LED fixtures for wash (any color any time) 60 line sets for scenery, supply of shimmer and mylar curtains, full fiberoptic curtain, 4 human fly rigs to fly people on stage (2 are Copperfield fly system--just without the kevlar), additional fly rig to fly humans over audience, complete surround sound audio system, aminal housing area inside attached to stage able to hold 8 large animals (horse size) and full attached outdoor arena, technicians, and dancers availiable in house if needed, hazers and low fog machines, back of entire stage has avail rear projection video screen, front video projection avail covering entire distance of front of stage (front and back full coverage with video) So, I am not currently offereing the facility, just asking if any of you feel there would be any interest in anyone you know wanting to rent for demo tape purposes. I appreciate any suggestions or fedback you may have. |

Hello Dennis!!
The facilty is named The Miracle Theater and is in fact owned by Fee Hedrick. You are correct. If it helps, you can se a 30 second video of the theater in "show mode" at http://www.miracletheater.com/show.php Due to being a tourist season, we close down Jan thorugh first half of Feb. I belive I may have met you when I was the GM for the 2008 season at our sister magic theater. When I posted my question above, I left off the name of the theater because I didn't want people to start playing games --I am as honest as they come and stated my question with full intention as is. Thanks--hope to hear some feedback soon. |

Ok say there is interest. What would the pricing structure be. This will really weed out the ones that can and cant afford this opportunity.
This is a great ideas to add to a business model as the theatre is vacant and not bringing in any cash flow. But to do this you need to make sure you cover your cost for heat, electric labor to run the equipment and so on. Just food for thought. Great idea and great direction you are going into. Best,

I don't think there's a magician alive that could compete with that demo video.
looks like a great facility. FWIW

What about the fact that some one does shoot a video their, then gets booked somewhere else and the client then wonders where the lights and special effects and big curtains are??
I agree you need a great video but would this backfire as presenting yourself too big or bigger then you are. however I also understand those of us that might take up such an offer most likely have a big show already. Just my thoughts. I shoot my videos 2 times a year in different theaters that I play at around the country and never needed a special place to go and shoot. So not sure how or why this is really needed. I guess some people want to shoot something just for video purposes this make sense. Nice theater by the way, kind of look like the Sight and Sound theater near me in Lancaster, Pa.

Hello The Mirror Images!!
To respond you your question--I would estimate the cost would be around $1,500 a day (10 hours) plus $25.00 per hour for each tech/support staff requested. There are several options I could offer that would have to adjust the price--such as HD cameras and operators, techs to operate human fly rigs, programming of lights for specific looks--I guess some lighting could be done ahead of time from notes given by the magician. This would be a closed event--meaning not having an audience in the house that would require cleaning up afterwards. I hope this answer to your question helps. I find it VERY interesting what Sam Sandler said about clients wondering where the stuff is. Never thought of that. Maybe a text screen at the end of the demo stating, "Filmed on location at..." |

Yes, we met. And I know the theater well. I was thinking this was the theater because of the "Flying" rigging. It's on my to-do list this year to see this show. I heard a lot of wonderful things about this theater and the show.

Most illusion shows are some sort of demonstration of their 40 or so boxes. Very view storylines, no drama... Just imagine what a strong illusionist could do in such a theater!! *goosebumps*
There are not a lot of stage magicians in the need of a good DVD. Just because if you are 'John Neumacher the Illusionist' you will not sell a lot of DVD's. You need to have a name. I think you have more luck with letting a known illusionist perform in this theater. As long as you get about 4500 dollar per show (meaning 180 people for 25 dollars)the costs are covered (estimation from my part) and everything above that is profit. for instance as soon as ticketsales for The Miracle are going down you can very easy get an illusionist to take over one of the nights and use that as a buffer to get some money, while offering an new show, untill the new grand musical is there... There is some professional footage of The Miracle on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMiracleTh......8ljjFRt4 If this is the kind of filming you are talking about... this is great! I really love the themesong of 'The Miracle'!! And I also want to say this: I have studied body language and I can see that you love what you do... :-D Gr, EVI |

As a producer I agree that the offer of a great locationis atractive and the folks that would use this kind of space would be interested But I aslo feel that perhaps you are better off looking to produce a few "off season Evenets"

The point of shooting a video in this environment would be to send to clients who would have similar set-ups in hopes of them hiring you for a theater show. Anyway, I am looking for a nice spot to do some filming. Theater Manager, send me a PM. I want to talk. Peter |
