A friend and I were talking last night about coins and how I wanted to get into coin magic. He said, "save up about $100 and buy a 5 walking liberties , a WL flipper, a WL expanded shell, and the bible(Bobo's MCM)."
Is this a good selection? Do you have any recommendations? I am just getting into coin magic, but I want to do 3-Fly's bad. Thanks in advance.

I would just buy some Half Dollars and then Bobo's MCM. You now have $90 to keep for a rainy day. Don't take coin magic fast, it is very hard to get good. Take a look at MCM and see what you like and then you can focus on learning coin magic you will use.
I would take a look at Paul Wilson's site for a 3-fly. Lee |

dj,
The WL coins are pretty though not 'the' magic. MCM takes a while to read and understand. It may take you some time to get comfortable with the concealments, false transfers and hidden transfers used in coin magic. Also, the gaffs made up in WL coins may cost more than you planned. You might want to get a copy of the revised Bobo's MCM, some half dollars from the bank, some english pennies from a coin store and allocate some time to your training. My coins across is just an example of how coin magic can be done at the fingertips and on open hands. While I may have added some options to the foundations of coin magic, the fundamental principles and the basics are as relevant as ever. These include naturalness of motion and action, attention management and clarity of effect. May the coins you drop always roll back to you, Jonathan Townsend

I have some of the basics down, like palming, backpalming, french drop, retention vanish. What is the US half dollar flipper from penguin? A Kennedy? if so what year?

Dude, you seriously don't need a flipper.
Don't worry about it now. When you get more involved in coin magic then you can buy one later down the road. It is definetly not a nessecity right now. As for half dollars, take Mr. Townsends advice. PLEASE take his advice. Also, PLEASE don't just spend the $100 because you can. You'll kick yourself later and will not be happy. My advice is to follow Mr. Townsend's advice about the coins, take a little extra cash, go buy Bobo's and master all you can in Bobo's. Then go order coins from Dean Dill or Todd Lassen. You can get a Walking Liberty with shell from both (I am currently waiting to get one from Dean, should be here tomorrow.) Chris |

You DON'T need any WLs. Get MCM, a shell, and a few halves.

Hey
I would get Bobo's, a few Barber halves(they are soft and oh so nice.) A jumbo nickle or chrome plated coin( just because it lasts longer and looks a whole bunch nicer.) Hocus has some really nice looking Silver Jumbos. Go for the best to start with if you are really interested in coin magic. Then just read the pages off Bobo's. Good luck. Brad

Dude, I don't know why everybody loves Bobo so much. Ok, I have 2 copies of it and yes it is a great reference but Roth's Expert Coin Magic is so much better. I didn't see that mentioned yet.
Also, for learning COIN magic, videos can be a very very helpful source because you can actually see what some of the sequences or vanishes and reproductions look like. When beginning coin magic it is VERY difficult to learn from a book. I think everyone is way too traditional and tend to follow a "herd mentality" sometimes when they say, "don't buy videos, buy books instead." I think you might want to look into the Mike Rubenstein encyclopedia of coin sleights DVDs and videos for handlings and finesse as well as some Roth stuff for routines. |

With sincerity and Tongue firmly in my cheek. (LOL)
IMHO , inch by inch it's a cinch. Every thing looked good when I was new at coin and magic in general. Back in 76 I was blown away by Albert Goshman. I felt that again the first time I saw Jon Born of Wichita. Re: Doing 3 Fly real bad. Many people do it that way. (mini-LOL) I know I do. That is why I don't do it. On the other hand having Nigel (the puppet that rocks and talks) heckle me as I try to change a Liberty Half Dollar into a harmonica one handed using Howie Schw.... cool move now that a major LOL. Enjoy the journey. And now a nearly normal Zen Tale. Student: Master, how long will it take to begin to master coin magic. Master: 10 years my student. Student: What if I practice every day till my palms become bloody Master: 20 years my student! Student: What if I buy every gimmick from Todd Lassen, Roy K, Johnson, Sasco..... ....... Master: ......... my student! With apologies to Todd L. and the other fantastic artist that have created props for this nearly normal magician. IMHO Gimmicks are great additions to your magic and to you. Connections to the audience is even more important. Find out who you are and who you are presenting to your audience. Besides magic props books, lessons (i.e. from Slydini and other lesser know magi's) I have found taking: Modern Dance, Improvisational Workshops from people like the Kapootz Klowns, and Reading books like The handbook of Physical Comedy by Rider and The Artist Way by Cameron have helped me create a magical and FUN close up presentation. Walking Liberty halves are pretty. So are Barber halves. So are Ben Franklins, but all of these are EXPENSIVE. You can manipulate a modern Kennedy half just as well as you can any other half dollar.
If you want to work with halves, get a TAIL SIDE half shell -- from a modern clad half dollar. Then use modern halves, not WL's or anything else. Forget the flipper. It's unnecessary. Get Bobo and Roth. Your budget should accomodate these items. BUT, if you want to be a little different, use silver dollars or Eisenhower dollars. Get one of those dollar sized Lincoln cents, and you will have everything you need.

I would start with videos from David Roth so you can see what the basic moves should look like. Don't buy shells or flippers until you can do the basics and can perform at least three coin effects with normal coins. Bobo is an excellent resource but is information overload for someone trying to find their way in coin magic.

The newer kennedys are a somewhat more hard to work with due to the finish on the coin. I would simply suggest buying some Kennedy 64's or around there. The 90% silver coins. They keep me from spending them at least since they are 2.50 each. However, Just get some regulars to pratice with and if you can... take the milled edges off of them using a sander. Then you can really learn.
