I have always thought the Fredi Up ones look the most realistic. Realistic isn't always necessary though if you are good (as you should be) with your misdirection.

You might need to paint it yourself. Start by spraying a regular one with "Fusion" primer by Krylon. Then use either brush paints or spray paints.
Theatrical makeup is also an option, once you have a good matte base to start with. The trouble with the Fredi up tt's is that the color pattern isn't necessarily accurate. Also, they have durability issues. There are some threads about them here and there.

When I pitched these at Houdini's (Yeah... I worked there ) I kept a brown sharpie around to demonstrate how easy and rather nice looking they did the job darkening a standard Vernet TT.

There are some good alcohol-based wood stains that come in a magic marker type pen. These should work fairly well.

Quite often magic shops will have dark TTs in stock. Just send a few emails to inquire. The last that I heard, Daytona Magic had them in stock on a regular basis. Hippity Hop Magic in Grand Rapids, Michigan probably has some.

There is a great section on Rules of Thumb by Sophie Evans showing how to make a great thumbtip from scratch. It was taught by Chris Broughton, and is specifically directed toward making a custom tip for Black performers. Available from Kevin James.
BTW, it is a wonderful set with contributions from Daryl, Larry Jennings, TA Waters, Peter Pit, TC Tahoe, Joel Bauer, Billy McComb, Steve Valentine, and many others. |

The problem with the "depot" TT's are that they are usually one color, which may or may not match, and which do not have the correct color shadings. I PM'ed modfrog with some instructions on how to do this.

One day (long ago in the good ole bad days) when I was hanging out in the Fun Shop in Memphis, TN, an older black gentleman came in to get an item (his words). Refused to talk to anyone but Slim (the owner). Turns out he was there to get a TT, a regular Vernet TT... He didn't care that it didn't match his skin color at all. After Slim assured him that we were in fact magicians... he would finally speak to us about it. This is what he told us when we inquired if he would be coloring it or trying to match it to his skin color: "It doesn't matter. Hardly any one ever gets to actually see it and any few that might glimpse will never notice it, anyway."
