As a Jewish atheist I agree with Santa.
(Mods, please change this topic to "Who are the most wonderful people?", and delete the Shakespeare references. )

Josh... I think you'll find the word is 'wonderfulest' or more normally 'most wonderfulest'.

I always liked that someone could be Jewish and an athiest, I'm converting....wait, do I have to be something first to convert?

No, Santa, you can't convert. To be a Jewish atheist your mother has to be Jewish.

Bertrand Russell maintained that there was a big difference between Catholic atheists and Protestant atheists. Maybe you could become one of those.

Wasn't it Bertrand Russell who joked about the atheist driving in Ireland who was stopped for speeding by a policeman who liked to apply the law with a somewhat religious discretion. He asked the driver whether he was Catholic or Protestant. The driver replied that he was an atheist. The policeman asked "Ah, but are you a Catholic atheist or a Protestant atheist."

There are many reasons, but the proponent can't even get basic facts right: this Lanier was not Jewish even on her father's side and she was not the first woman poet to publish a book in England. How can you trust an article that gets the basics wrong? Googling, I found someone who takes the story apart here very thoroughly: http://www.bibliobuffet.com/book-brunch-......e-062010 |

It was said that she was the first woman to publish a BOOK or collection of POETRY in England, NOT the first to publish a book nor the first to publish poetry. However, even if she wasn't, it doesn't torpedo the overall theory.
And your article does not say that the father was not Jewish. Rather, it says that the evidence for that is not conclusive. Furthermore, Jews are said to have hid "clandestinely" in Elizabethian England so perhaps that is why the evidence is not so obvious. Still, nice of you to join the Café just to attack that article.

Amelia Bassano Lanier was not a Jew. Her mother wasn't and there's no proof her father was, and since he married a Gentile, what kind of Jewish education does anyone think she could have gotten? The whole Hudson/Posner story falls apart the minute you examine its premises closely. |

And remember, Balducci, that Thomas Mann practically worshiped the bard, so he should know.

Finally got around to reading the original Posner piece. Despite the claims in the original article (no longer available to non-subscribers, I'm afraid) and the review that ThomasMann linked to, Posner does not champion the view that Bassano wrote the plays; he gives a lighthearted look at the Shakespeare Trust and at its recent inclusion of Amelia Bassano Lanier.
Hudson provides a Bibliography with many of the articles clickable. So far as my inexpert opinion matters, it seems pretty likely to me that the author of the plays is the William Shakespeare normally associated with them. But false trails often lead to the deepest insights. John

According to Douglas Hofstadter, William Shakespeare's plays were not written by him, but by someone else with the same name.
