Who here regularly uses Rubenstein's ROPS (retention open Palm steal)? Just learned it the other day (from his Knock Out Coin Magic series), and I love how casual and disarming it is. This is a move I will definitely use. Anybody notice that with just a minor tweak, you can go direcly from finger tip to edge grip?

I use it with my one coin routine. And yes, I go into finger tip edge grip while showing the coin is invisible. That open position is a good moment in the routine. Of course, I make the coin visible again.

I use it since 20+ years (remember VCR ?!?! I had his encyclopedia of coin techniques.) It's one of my favorite. The difficulty is to use it not too often.

I use it on and off. Its a great move, especially when you get multiple coins involved.
One for the money...., 2 for a pass..., 3 for a Fly..., and 4 for matrix!

I saw this move live from Dr. Rubenstein lecture here in Manila and I should say it's like a real magic.

Hey guys,
Double J: edge grip is becoming my new best friend. Curtis Kam's DVD's sold me on it. Taiga: I know what you mean about the VCR! Lots of good stuff on those videos. Did you ever have an issue with using it too much? Jedoonatmagic: you vanish multiple coins singly? Or do you mean that you do a multiple coin click pass somehow using ROPS? My own personal thoughts: I think Rubenstein uses it well in his own routines. I played around with the move for the past week, and I can do it, however, for myself, there are other alternatives that work better for me and that accomplish similar things, so I use those tools instead. But the concept of it is cool--its a reverse retention vanish in a way. evikshin |

Hey there Evikshin, glad you got a chance to play with the R.O.P.S. move. It is designed to actually save a move - if the coin is there, you just have to indicate the coin, and it is gone. There are no other ways to accomplish the same thing with such a minimun of movement, what are you doing to get that last coin out?

I really like this move, when I first saw it some year ago on one of Mr.Rubinsteins DVDs of the knockout magic volumes, I didn't understand at all what happened to the coin, it didn't only fool the eyes but the brain too! However my main concern about using it has always been that I feel like it's such a fishy action to tap the coin to display that it's there.
When I saw it back then, with layman eyes (Mr.Rubinstein pretty much set off my coin magic journey) it was magical. But nowadays I don't feel convinced enough to use it. Perhaps someone could more in-depth explain the psychology behind the tap? How do the audience react to it? What exactly motivates me to tap the coin to display it, when I can just openly display it? And also, I've been watching this forum everyday like a hawk for a year, I thought it was time to sign up! |

I really like the Doctor's R.O.P.S. techniques. A few work extremely well for me.
Actually I really love the whole Encyclopedia set. Very good production, excellent camera angles, and the instruction is top-rate. I was spending so much time watching David Roth DVDs that I hadn't even looked at these - I received all three for Christmas. Now I am going through them one by one, and I am very impressed! Thanks Dr. Michael! Jim |

Orb, the tap is just a simple gesture to indicate the coin. Its used while you say, things like, "one last coin to go", "leaving this coin", etc.

Thanks Lawrens! I've been keeping an eye on your magic and impressive crystal ball manipulation, I'm def a fan!
I believe I might be overthinking on this one. You're right it's just a simple gesture, and it was definitely pure magic when you did them on the knockout volumes. Oh and good luck on the lecture in Sweden that's today or tomorrow if I'm not wrong, I was supposed to be there, but something came up. Hopefully you'll be back someday. |

I'm lecturing in Copenhagen tonight, but its too late for you to get there. I will be leaving Halmstad the morning after the lecture, then its on to a lecture in Berlin. so, if you can't make the lecture in Halmstad, you might want to come in for the morning workshop in Copenhagen! I probably won't get back to sweden for a while (the last time I lectured there was in 1985!), so I hope you can make it!
