Dear Creators,
Pleasepleaseplease stop making videos for your new products that are substantially nothing more than slideshows of the same text I just read in the online ad. If you don't want to actually show anything meaningful, that's fine. I understand. A video can reveal the work, and cost you money. I get that. But don't sucker me into reading your ad twice. It ****es me off, and THAT costs you money, too! Can I get an amen? |

AMEN -
In most cases, if a product is so weak that the video reveals the work, the product doesn't deserve a price tag. There are a very few exceptions, but a video should show the actual performance of the effect. I hate products that you don't even know what the heck it does. Case in point - read this description and watch the video: http://www.murphysmagic.com/Product.aspx?id=45450

I'm with you on this. I see video "ads" that are excercises in creative editing but give glimpses of the effect or endless shots of people reacting. The purpose seems to be to get people talking but they rarely show the actual effect in any meaningful way.
That always leads me to conclude that there's something wrong and I don't buy. |

There is so very little new in mentalism, really.
To show a video of every "new" effect would just be the height of redundancy. Dick Brooks :rotf:

Hey Kevin,
I realize now that I don't function well on only 6 hours sleep over the past 2 nights....I did a double-take when I thought your post heading read "A plea to THE Creator." I would have suggested that it's perhaps time to get out of Vegas, at least for a few days! |

Ironically, Eric, that's a show I'm pitching to casinos.

As a creator I completely agree with Kevin. That said, the difficulty of showing the entire effect is that most (not all) effects can be reverse engineered and thus some (not all) bypass purchasing the effect to attempt or succeed in making it up themselves thereby not compensating the artist for their work. The trick of course is to show enough to whet the appetite and at least give a clear demonstration of what said effect, product is. This day and age is no easy task.
However, it can be done. Just so many people prefer to cater to the MTV generation with flash and fancy editing that the entire effect basically falls flat on its face for lack of understanding or comprehension. Best regards, Max

A demo is another medium than a written description. Some prefer this, other that. What's really bothering you?

This is what he's on about:
VIDEO (cue terrible stock drum n bass music) BLACK some text fades in 'Mindreading' text fades out 'some text fades in 'The Abyss (insert silly name of effect here basically)' text fades out some text fades in 'You too can read minds yadada' (ok you get the idea) CUT TO Someone doing something you can't quite see with something you can't quite make out on some people who just so happened to be standing somewhere waiting to be amazed Person In Street: 'Wow that's amaaazing' (freaks out like a big girl even though he's built like a house) CUT TO BLACK CUT TO some text 'Out Now - visit http://www.blahblahblahetc.com' Now imagine that all lasted about 5 minutes, you were none the wiser about what the heck the effect was, and when you visit the site it describes the effect pretty much just like the video made out - i.e. Very little and pretty annoying I think that's what he's on about - people who've figured out how to put text in movies but very little footage to back it up |

AMEN, no more "Teasers" or "Trailers" of people yelling, reacting or just some "cutting edge" graphic that have nothing to do with the effect but whose sole purpose is to hype hype hype. AMEN

AMEN.
I've sat through far too many pre release white on black text previews, even some nicely done like Steve Fearson's Legend, that have no content other than restating (somtimes with glittery moving text) what was in the description. If you want to do that, just give me a description and save me from wasting my bandwidth on another WMV file. |

I adored a demo for an Arctic-Bird-Magic instant download miracle. They provide a straight demo of the effect, but at the moment the very angley move (the subject of the video) was done, the camera shot switches to one very nearly behind the performer. AMEN!
