I like playful and magical tricks at a value price, and am thrilled about a new one. Check out the WhirlyGig, which is the "Growing-Shrinking Head Illusion" in miniature . . . literally.
You get the gizmo (sort of a cross between a spinning top, a name badge, and the larger, Bruce Kalver version operated with a drill for stage audiences), as well as several tricks/gags for $30 shipped, and also a DVD with performance by Dan Wolfe. It's a great price, and according to the website, until Jan 31, you get the growing/shrinking dice and also the growing/shrinking penny for the same price. The link is http://www.smmagic.com/closeup/whirlygig.htm I haven't used this on a crowd yet . . . Still getting used to it. But since Dan's intro offer is ending soon, I thought I'd review it now. I can say the premise is clever and the basic trick (a card trick where the card - or at least the front and back images - shrink after close up audience watches the disc), is funny and novel. The application of the "shrinking effect" to sponge balls and sponge bunnies (as well as dice and penny) is also humorous, and will make for some great close up well beyond some of the "pick a card" cliches out there. The only fault I could find with the materials is that Wolfe speaks on the DVD about friends in his magic club who do slights, and how cool it would be to execute the trick with a slight. He doesn't show us any, and I'm sympathetic as someone "slight of hand," but why didn't he bring in his buddy to show the sleight version of the card trick? That imperfection is really a quibble in what is otherwise a great trick/routine premise. I'll bet you could get 8-10 minutes out of this if you draw it out with jokes and repartee, and the set-up really lends itself to family audiences as well as adults (just think what the "growing and shrinking" suggestion will get you in terms of insinuations). On the whole, I'd give this one a 9.5 out of 10, especially as long as the trick comes with the dice and penny shrink (as I can attest from an earlier item which did not work, seemingly through no fault of Smoky Mountain Magic, but which Wolfe refunded immediately), and he's got a great assortment of creative ideas in the works. |

Why not combine this with Brother John Hamman's Micro-Macro or one of it's variants (I'm partial to Mike Powers' Diminishing Returns).
