Hi All:
If this is the wrong forum, please let me know. I'm looking for some leads/info of Russian magicians/mentalists who were active in that country (although they may have toured internationally) during roughly the same time that Houdini was an active performer. Obviously this would encompass both the late Czarist and early Soviet periods. Have done preliminary research but with little to no real results. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much! |

You might be able to find some information if you can read German. I can point you to an author.
Jochen Zmeck wrote a number of books that were published in the DDR. Some of these had information about Russian and Soviet magicians. Also, there have been some Russian magicians on the Café. Do a search for posts by Stepanov. He knows his Russian magic history. He will be able to help you. If you have a knowledge of Russian it will help you a lot.

Bill’s advice is sound. If you only read English, you’re in for a lot of frustrating work. The only publication in English that I know of which has material focusing on Russian magicians is a book by Alexander Lipovsky, The Soviet Circus A Collection of Articles (Moscow, Progress Publications, 1967), which has a chapter on Kio (presumably the elder) and earlier magicians who toured in Russia.
Other titles from my library notes which have Russian magic history: Speaking of Kio, try also Emil Kio’s book, Фокусы и Фокусники (Fokusy y Fokusniki; Conjuring and Conjurors), published in Moscow, at least one edition in 1958. Aleksandr Vadimov & Mark Trivas - Ot magov drevnosti do iľuzionistov naÅ¡ich dnej Stephen Oettermann’s Lexicon der Zauberkünstler, a more recent publication that is pretty incredible in its scope. von Klinckowströem, Carl Graf – Die Zauberkunst. Grohmann, Karl F. – Frauen in der Zauberkunst. Uriarte – Die Magie des XIX. Jahrhunderts als Kunst und als Geheimwissenschaft. Bill doesn’t mention any of Gunther Dammann’s books, and I know he’s familiar with them, so maybe my notes are faulty, but they indicate that some Russian magicians were mentioned in Dammann’s Die Juden in der Zauberkunst (Jüdische Zauberkünstler). |

I had forgotten all about Dammann's books. I have Jay Marshall's copy of Zauberkunst und Zauberkünstler.
The magicians he names are those such as Max Malini, Professor San Martini de Kastrozza, Max von Rhodin, and the comedy magician Max Carmellini, all of whom actually achieved fame outside their homeland. Malini emigrated to the US when he was quite young, and Carmellini became a citizen of Hungary. I don't have the other Dammann book. If memory serves, Dick Hatch beat me out of it at the first Marshall auction. Drat!

Bill and Craig:
Thanks for the great info! My German is rusty but with my trusty dictionary by my side, I probably can struggle through. I'm also in the process of brushing up on my Russian, although that may take a bit longer. Still I'm going to try and trace down everything you mentioned. If anything else comes to mind, please let me know. Thanks again and best! gary |

Oppps!
Sorry CLAY! For some reason I had Craig on the mind (have to check that out in the mentalism section). My apologies. Now how come I can't transform things so effortlessly when performing?!~ gary |
