George, you're one of my favorite cats on the forum-Depends on the show, if it's a bday party, sometimes I spend the first couple minutes trying to find bday kid, as well as shaking wrong kids hands, etc. Love the topper wand big time to start out as well.

There is a wonderful routine described on the magic Café for free. I think it would suit the Great Zucchini's style very well. And it won't cost him a cent.

I have used the above routine for years. It is the best opener you can have.

I don't have a opener trick, but a routine. The first thing I do is pretend that I can't find my wand (it's behind my ear). Kids think it's hillarious and they keep yelling "it's over there" "behind your ear". I act shocked and 'find' it (Put it's not MY wand), and proceed to shrink it. From there I use a variety of different wand tricks (appearing cane, breakaway wand in dove pan, appearing wand, etc.) with patter (put they non of them are MY wand). Eventually I find MY wand, and say we can start with the magic now.
For older kids I do the same routine but change the patter. I start with asking them the first thing they thing of when they hear the word magician. Usually there's rabbit, wand, coin from ear, hat, cutting a women in half, etc. I start with wand, bu instead of 'loosing' my wand, I tell them about all the different types of wands there are, and end with finding MY wand. |

I loved Kyle's interruption concerning the reason - thanks for that. For me, it is always about relationship with the audience. Particularly establishing the comedy in the show as comedy is my focus and magic a vehicle. That said - I greet kids and bigs with my feather duster wand which leads to my "dust bunny" sponge rabbit bit. This breaks the little kids in, puts them at ease with some magic and laughs for the bigs. Easy and fun and gets everybody involved. Then I'm into the real opener - my monkey puppet vent routine that is loaded with screams and laughs.

Silver Scepter is one of my favorite. On repeat performance for the same children, I use my (where do I keep my magic wand safe). In a Coco Cola bottle which also is my invisible magic helper. Sometimes, he will try to push the wand out. I tell the kids to watch and yell anytime they see the wand moves. After all the yelling, I turn the the bottle upside down while holding the magic wand, the bottle is rising up the wand. To stop this, I placed the chip can over the bottle and still everything rise up the wand.
The prop is the silk cola, which is modified for the routine. To see my invisible friend, I produce a 18 inch rabbit silk. Tricky Ricky |
