Hi folks:
Does anyone know what the striking strip on a matchbook is made out of? Is it possible to get only the striking strip material without having to salvage them from a matchbook or matchbox? I'm asking because I'm making my own gimmick matchbooks. If anyone knows how to make your own custom matchbooks (for example if there are any kits or anything) I'd appreciate it. A search of google and the magic Café hasn't turned up what I'm looking for. |

Paper matchbooks are called safety matches because they will only ignite using the striker on the book.(Unless you expose them to direct heat.) That is because half of the chemicals that make the match ignite are in the match head and the other half are on the striker. The striker is made of powdered glass and red phosphorus and a little glue to make it stick to the paper.
As far as I know it is the only thing that this concotion is used for so you will probably have to go the the match mfg's to get your strips. |

Don't know how helpful this is, but you can get a box of strike-anywhere matches and attempt to work it into your project.

I learned to make Mystic Smoke from Fingertips with old strikers when I was a kid.
