I'm trying to make a script for an effect, I'll fist describe what the effect looks like from the sitters point of view, and then some ideas for the script.
The effect: The performer lays a cork board over the table (the cork board could be under a cloth before the performance), and then produces a deck of cards. He asks a sitter to please shuffle the deck as much as he wants, then he is told to cut the deck wherever he likes and sign the back of the showing card. He then completes the cut and shuffles again. (Note that the performer does not touch the deck in the entire process) The sitter is the asked to turn the deck face up and make 4 different piles the spread this piles along the cork so all the cards a visible. The performer then produces a dagger hovers over the cards and stabs the signed card. My idea for the script/presentation is to explain how spirits sometimes stay with us if they feel their mission in this world is not complete, strong feelings like love or revenge may cause this. Here is where I need help... More or less I was thinking of a story about a lady that is betrayed buy her husband and gets killed. She has to be betrayed buy something with cards involved, so the cards make sense in the story. Her spirit has stayed with us for revenge. When the cards are layed face up, and before producing the dagger, the performer explains how this spirits can stay bonded to things that belonged to that person and then produces a lady's glove and puts it on, then gets the dagger so that it is guided by the spirit within the glove when he makes the stab. Sorry if I haven't explained myself very well English is not my native language. Do you like the effect? Any ideas on how to get the playing cards in the story? Thanks a lot

Why are you doing a card stab in a spirit routine? It sounds just like a magic trick to me. If it is a womens glove wouldn't be too small to put on? Why would YOU put the glove on in the first place since it belongs to another person (women)? The idea is to let the glove guide you in locating a signed card, correct? Normal playing cards IMHO sound out of place in this routine and I am still trying to wrap my mind around the idea of stabing a dumb card.
Photos sound better and instead of doing a stabing like a magicain, why not just have the tabled gloved tap it's index finger on the table and have the photo move on its own as if a ghost hand had touch it? Having a photo or card move just one inch without a person touching it is far more powerful then a card stab. Then again I really don' know what you are after because of the card stab. Are you just a magician doing a trick or are you doing a bizzarre routine and calling a spirit? The card stab just throws me completly off here. R |

I saw this effect on a Mentalism DVD and was thinking about how could I adapt it to a bizarre theme, photos sound much better than cards, I like that.
I don't think that a glove taking possession of the performer and finding and stabbing the photo/card with the name of the husband sounds that bad. We all know the story of a pair of gloves that belonged to an assassin and when some somebody wheres them he or she feels the urge to strangle... Obviously the glove moving taping on the photo and the photo moving sounds much better, but I haven't got the knowledge or resources to put that together.

I don't see anything wrong with taking a "magic trick" and trying to turn it into a bizarre performance. Isn't that what most bizarre magic is to begin with?
I don't think that a bizzare card stab is dumb at all.....anything can become a great piece of theater with the right performance. OnTiltSoon, This isn't so much a Script as perhaps my own ideas for it....with a story idea. As the sitters settle themselves around the table, a candle is lit and the lights are dimmed. The Performer produces an old deck of cards, apparently from around the late 1800's. A tale is woven of an outlaw and card shark in the old west, his wife and the protitute, with whom he was unfaithful to his wife. The wife, outraged when she found the two together took a dagger and murdered them both, and then took her own life. Performer then displays the dagger and explains that sometimes when lives end so violently and so tragically, they leave an imprint on objects. In this case, the dagger, and a blood stained glove. A sitter is invited to select a card, to represent The Outlaw and another sitter invited to take a card to represent The Prostitute. The cards are then ribbon spread on the table. The dagger seems to come to life and stabs a card. At the same time, the glove comes to life and "crawls" toward a card, tapping it's finger on it. The stabbed card is the card representing The Outlaw and the card the glove is tapping is now blood stained. The spirit of the wife has located the two once again. Alternatively, you could have the sitters place the two cards in two different places in the deck. The glove could animate and grab the dagger and then stab into the ribbon spread deck, stabbing two cards together. The cards are brought face up on the dagger and are both blood stained. It is The Outlaw and The Prostitute, together again. The past has been repeated. Anywhoo....just some thoughts on the idea!

I understand that a bizarre routine can go different direction, but I just seen too many card stabs in my 30 years of performing that I don't like them anymore.
If a person can give meaning to this routine then it will work. If a knife MUST be used, here is one way that I MIGHT do it. First I have to say that I would NOT put a womens glove on my hand. I would have the glove tap a few times on the table and after a beat, pick the glove up. Holding it tightly in my closed left fist I go into a trace and half close my eyes as I tilt my head to the side. With a shaky hand I reach toward the knife that is lying to my right. I hold a position where my right hand is a few inches from the knife (10inches). After a moment of making my fingers wiggle and become stiff, the knife turns toward me and slides across the table and under my hand. Of course I pick up the knife . I would hold the gloved hand up near my face and hold the knife over the photos (cards). I do not hold the knife as if I am about to stab the table, but hold the knife by the handle and the blane pointing away from me. In other words I pick the knife up from the table and KEEP it in the same position as I move it over the photos (cards) Moving the knife over the photos (cards) I stop and after a beat, one of the photos or cards lying under the knife MOVES. I react as if I was in pain and the photo moves again. Dropping the knife I slowly pick up the photo/card and end the routine. It is still like a card stab without the stabing! The only promblem that I see is giving the photos/cards a meaning in relation to the glove. Once you have your meaning, then you have your routine. Best Ray |

Could a female spectator don the glove, take the knife and plunge it into one of several male photos spread out; the other photos would have nothing on the back but the chosen pic blood stained. thus the spectator "channeled" the spirit of a woman (who went insane, killed her husband, and was sent to Luna perhaps) murderer (for whatever reason)?

If the knife don't have a good size hilt, then the person's hand could slide down the handle and all the way down the blade. Are you wondering how I know this? It happen to me over 20 years ago. I think this is an interesting idea, it gives some motivation and story to a card stab. I think we should remember that while we may be jaded to "old effects" most people have never seen ANY magic performance. The idea needs to be developed and added with real acting ability, but I do like it. I have developed ideas in the past about a haunted glove and having the spectator experience unexplainable phenomenon while wearing it.
