Not a cloud in the sky, but the schools in NYC are declared closed for tomorrow. Very unusual here to announce a closing the day before. Usually you wait for the 6:00 AM announcement that morning. This sounds like it could be bad . . .

They did one of those day-before closings here a week ago, and screwed up: it wasn't bad at all that day. Then it got much worse, but they didn't cancel school the next day.
Seems to me they should have a system of looking out the window rather than trying to predict the weather. I guess they're too lazy to get up at 4:00 AM (or whatever time you'd have to make the decision). Here in northern Germany they cancel school once every twenty years or so. |

Well that's what happened here. Not too bad by 3:00 PM, but school was cancelled. Coming down much harder now, but they have already announced there'll be school tomorrow.

Don't worry about the schools, NYC kids cannot speak properly anyway so missing school won't hurt 'em.
I've a dumb question and keep in mind I've never lived in a large city and am new to snow. In the part of NYC with big buildings wouldn't the heat put off by the buildings melt the snow prior to it hitting the streets? |

Yes, and the rain turns to steam.

If you had a mesh laundry bag full of clams could you hang them off of those fire escapes and cook 'em?

I don't think that's funny. People get burned by city snow. Think of the people.

Come on, it isn't like they are real people, they are New Yorkers, if you can't bake 'em there you can't bake 'em anywhere.

Makes sense to me, thank you.
I just talked to my dads woman, they just got back from NYC and the only thing she had to say was the schools were closed! |

Yah it was HORRIBLE! I shoveled 2 inches of snow and 3 ft of partly cloudy out of my Driveway.
