I still say it shouldn't have been possible for him to leave the track, and crash into an exposed steel beam, regardless of the cause of his crash. The track didn't contain him and he was led into a row of steel girders. I don't believe any of the athletes who've been running that track believed that should be a possibility. That's a design problem he paid for with his life. The track's been running faster than it was designed to. Seems like the attitude's been "BONUS! Fastest track in the world, beat that." A simple, explicitly clear message was received yesterday: "look something's wrong right here". Confirmed by dozens of experienced athletes, including the favorite for gold. The modifications they've made since are an acknowledgement of that- I don't care how they spin it.

Frankly, the way the games has unfolded thus far feels like karma. I've lived here in Vancouver for the past two years and the hubris surrounding the games was insane.
The Olympic Village is going to end up costing taxpayers more than a billion dollars. We've got a ridiculous problem with poverty within walking distance of the downtown venues. Already Canada's been accused of poor sportsmanship because of limiting the practice time for international athletes. But nobody who can do anything about this sort of nonsense cares -- we've got our Olympics, and darned if we aren't going to milk this for everything we can. And already we've looked ridiculous. Two of our notable singers are mocked for obvious lip-synching. Our Olympic torch runners need to be driven to the ceremony, which has technical issues. Our venues haven't been getting snow, and the snow that we've had to truck and helicopter(!) in is getting washed away by the rain. But this luge tragedy really takes the cake. Considering that the warnings about the dangerous nature of the track were ignored, it pretty much seems like people decided that Vancouver was going to have the "best" events the world has ever seen, and they weren't going to let Chicken Little stop them from achieving that. And that poor kid had to pay for that vanity with his life. The news already has photos circulating of padding being put on the beams. Padding wouldn't have saved the kid's life, but after a ton of empty gestures, what's one more?

Yea the physics of decelerating from that speed to 0 in the span of inches means no matter HOW much padding you have, it does not change the result. (I don't know what the speed was exactly but it was significant)

It is not my intention to try and minimize anything about this tragedy, but it should be noted that this luge track opened in Winter of 2008 (if not sooner) and had 5000+ runs down it over the last two years with few if any injuries.
(Just in case anyone reading might think that it just opened a week or two ago and was untested etc.)

I'm with Laurie. The speed of the fellow hitting the support was 88 mph. A wall would have at least displaced the blow and perhaps not have killed the young man. I watched news video and I think I see the problem....a wall would have blocked some prime seating areas.
Hey, don't think of the housing, which I heard was fantastic, for the athletes as costing tax payers a billion dollars. Just give the houses away and then it will be like your health care, you all can say "we have free housing!" and pretend to ignore how the housing is paid for! Question about the track, which our pal the Bald one said has had 5000 runs. Isn't the thing coated with ice and pretty much sculpted into turns and so forth? If so wouldn't it be safe to say that the track at this point isn't the same as last Winter or the same as two months ago etc? |

They said they changed it so I would think that is done with adding or removing ice. Is the whole dang thing filled with those tubes like they freeze hockey rinks with?

I found this description on the web of how artificial tracks work: "The types of artificial luge tracks used in the Olympics are tremendous structures that embody a lot of technology. There are fewer than two dozen artificial luge tracks in the world. An Olympic track is artificially refrigerated. The bobsled/luge course used in the 2002 Salt Lake City Games is a reinforced concrete track with evaporators buried in the concrete. The evaporators cool the track to 12 degrees F (-11 C). The track is then sprayed with water to create the approximate 2-inch surface of ice." http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/outdo......uge1.htm

A serious issue I've mentioned previously is that the course has been running 20km faster than design specifications state is was supposed to. What does that say about what the powers that be know about this track? http://www.fil-luge.org/News-Detail.155.......fac1e364 "'This is not in the interest of our International Luge Federation and it makes me worry', said Fendt." |

Note the last article I linked to and quoted from was dated December, 2008.
