I'm not about to get into a flame war with you over the merits of mine or anyone elses work...
But for arguments sake... http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=15 ;) How many effects have you released and had names like Luke Jermay, Andrew Gerards, and others pick up, and collaborate on? Regarding the sae of the book... things GO ON SALE. It's the nature of the beast. I have my reasoning for putting 13th on sale and they are my own. I feel they are sound and I stick by that decision. It's a modified (hopefully modernized) Living and Dead test. It combines a few sneaky things to create a little synergy. My routine accomplished (for me) exactly what Phill was suggesting. His was sage advice. With regards, Sean |

Any possible "personalization" of a living and dead test can easily be avoided by limiting the names to be used to people other than relatives or family members -- e.g., people you don't know but would most like to meet, etc. The same effect (i.e., which of several names is the "chosen" one) can be used without reference to whether they are living or dead, e.g., famous actors/actresses, authors, historical personages, etc., etc.

...exactly.
I do think some personal relevance keeps the impact in, without focusing on such a heavy (negative) theme. I try to get the same impact by using a positive experience and anchor those emotions (and memory) for a guaranteed denouement'. |

I saw a performer doing a 'living/dead' test some years ago. He went along a line of 7 people on the stage getting them to say the names of the people they were thinking of... between them 6 were thinking of people that were alive and one was thinking of someone that had died.
As the performer went down the line the spectators said the names, Simon, Mary, Sandra, William, Jamie, Vera....and when it came to the turn of the guy on the end, with tears forming in his eyes, he blurted out ....MOTHER... and broke down sobbing. Had it been a comedy sketch it would have been hilarious. However it was neither. Bad form? In this instance yes.

In my case, even if I'm not much experience, Living and Death, I rather stay away from it, since the emotion it can create. Even if the person who do the test is okay whit the name, there's always a chance that somebody else in the audience may not that person and had not grieved yet.
But I like the principle behind, so I would probably go, by asking the person to write down the name of a person who have an positive impact on their live, that can be a love one, a friend, a teacher... If I ever decide to use a routine whit death people, I'll probably go whit something that can use death personnality (actor, politician, or historical caractere) I do understand that some people are at ease whit this effect, and have the necessary experience to counter any situation that may occur, but since I'm new to it, I rather go whit surefire effects in which I won't but my self in a situation where people will be inconfortable around me. But the most important is that anything we do, we have to be respectfull of the lay audience. |

Oh boy, threads like this make me feel a lot older than I should be.
First - let's call it the Living or Dead Test PRINCIPLE. Use it for anything but names of dead and living people - or just living people - by cleverly using one of the ways the principle works and you still have a very good effect. The reason for "Living and Dead" in the title -- guess what -- magicians stole this (appropriated it) from spiritualists who c;aimed it was real/ They (spiritualists) probably stole it from someone else -- maybe even traveling show juggler-magicians of another era. This mentalism "trick" put into a magic act as a real living and dead identification test makes for bad routining -- but put into a ghost show or seance is playing with the proper emotional strings is real names are used. It can be done with brands of cars, football teams, golfer's names, cartoons, cereals -- if you but think of it as a principle and use any of the many methods to gain the end result that is meaningful for your show.

Go read up or watch some Jon Riggs DVDs.... hey has some marvellous tips. The key is context... and dealing with the dead, there are ways to get someone to pick a less intense "dead" person.
Living and Dead tests have been a staple for ages because it goes again back to the roots of mentalism... spiritualism... which is in turn built on ancient foundations. Piercing the viel will always be an interest to most humans who fear the final destination. hence, I like to combine it with Q&A for added kaboom! As others said, don't do it if you have no idea about reading audiences, have sensitivity, and have a purpose for doing it- and are ready to stand behind whatever you are portraying the effect to be.

I wouldn't want to do living or dead. Ian Rowland has an alternative presentation in his Sense of Touch booklet.
