It's rare when things like this happen. Get over it or it will be a phobia.
I had one real bad experience too. I think we all do once or twice in our career lives. In this case a lot of people knew me and I was able to vindicate myself with the police. If not it could have turned into something real bad. Let's just sat it ****ed me off so bad on the way out I went up the the officer and got in his face. I'll PM it to you if you want. Real bad accusation. One I'm sure all family entertainers fear in the back of their minds. |

I've talked to the owner and told him that me being an entertainer makes me being suspected worse, since it's about my reputation. So he told me this won't spread. But still he thinks he's 100% sure nobody left or entered the room during my performance, which leaves me the prime candidate in his eyes, and I have to accept that, somehow. But he also told me he believed me, now, and we shook hands and said let's forget about it. At least I got the chance to talk to him for half an hour and he's got the chance to get to know me better and see how this accusation affects me and how I'm not the person who'd ever do anything to harm anybody, I hope. So it was so and so. It still hurts and upsets me being suspected of something I didn't do, by the boss of a place I really really like. Time will tell how this will play out and I'll try to still go there once in a while, while I don't really feel like going back there, right now. Thanks for all your kind words, I really needed to hear other magicians views on this, because it still haunts me.
Thanks! Ben |

Hey Ben, we have never chatted before on here but I hope I can help quell the guilt, a little heh.
I don't belive you need to feel bad, as this is what happens everywhere when people are focused on one thing, theft happens in cinemas, supermarkets (happened to me!), theatres, the street when occupied, trains, planes and so forth. Our mind slips, we get sucked into something and we forget to look after our valuables and it becomes easy day for fingers McGee. Your not to blame at all. If that was the case sainsburys owes me a new phone and my local cinema at least a hamper of chocolate. Just well done on being so honest and helpful, you being up front and a gentlemen will be what people remember you for. A bad situation can always arise but how you handle it will be the deciding factor on people's last impressions. |

Your only mistake was acting guilty and offering to look, giving them your wallet etc when they first noticed the bag was gone. It was nothing to do with you, and by acting weird you probably just made them suspicious.

You shouldn't feel badly at all. Folks that steal in this manner are always looking to take advantage of ANY thing that happens. You can't stop your life because something you do might lead to something not your fault.
What would you do if you had just been talking to the girl and the conversation become so intense that others joined in and .....well, you see? How about this: What if her bag was taken before you even did anything. Folks, both guy and gal, although it's more problematic for women will leave their bags unattended if they feel 'safe'. What if her bag was taken before you stated to perform???? The problem is that the consequences of an action are not always tied together. What if you were performing and a car comes crashing through the window and kills several spectators? #1- Maybe the guy driving just lost control of the car and it was not the result of your doing a card trick as if that was like a Butterfly flapping it's wings, etc. #2- The guy really hates magicians and YOU performing in his favorite bistro was the last straw! #3- The guy really WAS trying to kill you, but screwed it up and got those around you instead. Occam's Razor....the most likely is that the guy just lost control and you had nothing to do with it. Same thing.....the guy who stole the purse was just waiting for an opportunity...ANY opportunity.....You little show 'may' have or may not have afforded that opportunity, but even if it did it doesn't make it your fault any more logically than if the next day it's discovered that one of your spectator's is found to have Cancer! Everyone HAS to take responsibility for what is in fact their responsibility. On the other hand....it's nice that you can feel bad that something bad happened to someone who was participating in your magic. Even if not your fault, it's still good to empathize with the pain of others. Best,
Brad Burt

Next time use two partners, one suspicious looking dude to take the heat, and one to steal the stuff, while you distract them!
Just kidding, Obviously you didn't do it. You were the focus of attention the whole time. For all you know, that drunk that lost her purse, left it in the car, or at the bar while she went out to have a smoke. Or at the last bar, or at home ... She may have even found it and didn't tell anyone because she was to embarrassed that she had raised a ruckus. Get over it. You did nothing, quit acting like you did and move on. Don't keep bringing it up at the place where it occurred. Forget it and let everyone else forget too. A person's reputation is not ruined by a single accusation. Metatron |

Another update:
After a long day full of lots of practicing and working out alternative Mercuring handlings and improvised card stab moves with my new red switchblade knife, doing household chores, giving one-hour back rubs and being there for my grilfriend I decided to go out for a beer to seal the weekend off for myself, in order to start into a new week full of fresh enthusiasm and energy. The place I would have gone to (the place where I am supposed to do walkaround work regularly soon), was closed for some reason, but just down the road was the omnious bar from the topic of this thread, which usually would have been exactly the kind of place for a sunday night, but due to the recent events, I was having second thoughts. Well, I know the sunday shift there, I know that there's 3 people working there who I think have a pretty good picture of me, and so I sighed silently, put all bad feelings aside, as suggested, and walked in.... I'm so happy I did this, because everyone I talked to instantly brought up the outrageous bs that happened to me and apologised for it happening to me and thanked me for showing up anyways. They apologised for their paranoid boss and the drunk victim of the theft and the whole situation. Everybody was on my side and made me feel really at home again, just the way I had hoped things to turn out. We (me and my bar guys & girls) even fantasized about setting a snare for those little criminals who brought mischief to this good establishment. So, now if I want to, I'm hired as an undercover investigator in the case of recurring theft at this place - and I can tell you, catching this guy would really really feel good, since I actually do have good feelings for this bar - which made the whole situation kind of harder than it would have been if it happened at any indifferent place. So, if you have any ideas about catching the fellow, let me know, since this is something I do want to pursuit - these people (at least the staff) are my friends, as it turned out today. Anyway, I didn't pay a cent for my whole tab tonight, and I just wanted to let you all know that it looks like things have turned and I can sleep well again. Thanks for being there, Ben |

Here's an idea to catch the crook.
Get a purse, put a dollar bill in it, just sticking out a little bit. Inside the purse put one of these electronic proximity detectors. http://www.specialtyalarms.com/site/1313932/product/30-210 When you enter the bar and are performing, set the purse on a table, Set the proximity to desired distance so you can move freely while performing. Carry the key chain alarm on you. Start performing, If you hear the alarm, it will be the person leaving the area. Metatron |

Or use a purse with a metalic handle, hooked up to one of those dog training collars that gives a zap when they leave the area. Then the bad guy can announce himself! (eyow!!!)
he, he, he (ok, gonna go take my meds now...) :bg:
...what if I could read your mind?

See that's the best advise here yet many would call it crazy, I prefer the term entertaining. |

It shouldn't be too hard for the police to catch the thief for there were only 6 or so people in the room at the time and I believe that the purse was found in the males b-room so you can eliminate the females of the group. That being said I really like the above idea though good one...
