Anything I personally have or have seen made by Doug 'is' pro material.
Proper display is all important. When I received my Mer[btw she's the beauty pictured multiple times on Doug's site] a couple of years ago....the first thing I did was acquire an appropriate antique style display case. It's a small wood and leather suitcase.Next,I had a professional glassworker custom make a drop in sleeve made of 1/4" plate glass. Let's face it,these items are supposed to be unusual and rare...so displaying them as such is paramount. The next thing I considered was....how would she look if she was accidently found somewhere in nature.Would she be pristine looking? Or would she appear more as if she was found partially buried on some beach and exposed to elements.I went for the latter. So I dirtied her up a bit with 'real dirt'.[she's a dirty girl ]. This not only removed any unnatural shine or 'sticky' appearance, but made her really look like something that was discovered in 'nature'. I did the same with a miniature Mammoth I received from Doug:Antique box;museum style plate glass cover;antique map of where it was 'found';antique style sinage etc. Treat your 'items' as if they are 'treasures'.This takes a little time and a modest investment, but it makes all the difference. Happy trails. Rich Click here to view attached image. |

The bottom line is anyone who would ever express an issue to me would be immediatly taken care of. Any post saying otherwise and trying to soil my reputation by making broad claims is ridiculous. If there is a product that doesn't meet ones expectations, deal witth the producer. If a product that works for everyone else doesn't work for you how can you make ignorant claims that everyone elses doesn't work?
I know what I'm doing and I and MANY others have proved it over many years. So thanks but if we were dealing with a flawed product, there is an easy solution. I never claim perfection...just dilligence and loyalty to a customer. My feedback is of utmost importance to me. Issue #1. This thread was started because of it! Look if you buy a TV and it doesn't work, you contact the manufacturer. They might say "Did you plug it in?" Well, did you? IF yes, then they probably would say bring it in and get another one...it's got a years warrenty. (My stuff has a LIFETIME on it...and in all the years, in my recollection, I have had to replace ONE broken piece...this was back when the material I was using was a bit brittle (like porceline) and the guy slipped on the ice and fell on it! I replaced it. No issues.) Or do you go out and try to get everyone to not buy that brand of TV without even addressing your individual issue with the maker? Or not utilising the warrenty freely given? .

Here here!!
I am not a fan boy of Doug's and don't just post praise about everything that comes through the Café just to jump on the bandwagon. But, I own several of Doug's pieces and they are all absolutely top notch. After seeing my shrunky (properly displayed in a box that Tim W made just for it), my wife has refused to even look at my Zibit! Very creepy. Doug's products are pro and his service is a rarity these days. I am waiting on delivery of my ez-up and banners and then will be unleashing the Zibit to the local fairs and flea markets. I have no doubt about the impact it will make. Taking a cheap shot at this product or it's maker is below low. Keep doing what you do Doug, and thank you! - Dennis |

Quotes from communication with Doug over the years:
"Chris, call me on my 800-number." (My wife works for Verizon so I don't exactly sweat phone bills, but Doug feels that this service is important to provide to all of his customers.) "Hey, you've had your zibit for a few years. If you want an upgrade, send it back and I'll take care of it for you." (Response to mentioning to somebody else about displaying my Mer. I'm happy w/ both my Mer and Chup. I wouldn't THINK of changing or replacing them, but Doug offered!) These things were initiated by Doug, as is this thread. He has the attitude of "Hey, there may be a problem so I'll offer to fix it before you have a problem with it in the field." Primarily, I display my mer and chup as an extension of shows and conventions I'm contracted to do. I've done the single-o thing a few times and never lost money. In one instance, I didn't make near the money I wanted and learned to not pitch to the PC late 60s-early 70s crowd that is largely responsible for driving side shows off of the midway. Lesson learned. I don't do flea markets, etc. because I'm not at the point where I want to wake up at 4 am to be there for the 6 am early bird crowd. At some point, this may change. In my typical venues, they have been well-received. My chup is in a nice box provided by Doug (needs a slight refurb because it fell off of its resting place but that's my fault). I found a wicker "pet carrier" that I lined with excelsior and is now the display case for my mer. They are always under low light, and I've had no problem w/ degrading of material. Then again, I don't make it a habit of storing either in a closed car in the middle of the summer, either Chris |
