Has anyone explored the relationship between contact mind reading and push hands, the tai chi training exercise?
Push hands is a training exercise designed to improve balance and sensitivity. Two "players" face each other and seek to "capture the other person's gravity" by gently pushing each other, trying to upset the other person's balance. The notion of push hands is that by lightly touching another person, you can sense their "intention" and be in the position to either neutralize or redirect an attack. It helps develop physical sensitivity at a very subtle level. |

I have experienced this first hand as I know a few very experienced practitioners, people who have tried this will realise that the more force you exert the more you will fall off balance.
The highly skilled tai chi masters will be able to throw you away spiraling even if you place the smallest amount of force. I am certain it would help with contact mind reading however I do not know any practitioners that both train in tai chi and mentalism. |

Well - I do both (I am a TaiChi teacher and a mentalist pro). I would certainly not mix both...

So you wouldn't use a premise that you are extremely knowledgable about, indeed you would be one of the few in your area whom is a 'true' expert (in the field of Tai Chi)?
That is interesting... However I think it would be a beautiful premise, unfortunately, I am not the person to give any advice. So JJsanvert knows both fields and thinks they don't mix, that must answer the OP's question! Jon Hackett p.s. btw, when you were talking about the balance and all that in ur OP, I was thinking that doing that with no contact and having the spec imagine they are travelling from somewhere (which they tell you the location of) to somewhere (which you do not know) and after the tai chi muscle reading bit you are able to tell them not only where they went but which way they went etc.
It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them -- the character, the heart, generous qualities and progressive ideas. Doystoyevsky

Nice thought Mr. Hackett but, like contact mind reading, push hands requires contact with the other person. There are some teachers who claim to be able to project "chi" or energy at a distance and move people, but I'm deeply skeptical.
I apologize if I wasn't clear with my question. I wasn't proposing using tai chi as a theme for a contact mind reading illusion. I was just wondering whether the sensitivity that one develops though push hands strengthens ones ability to do contact mindreading...or visa versa. Paul |

I am relatively new to contact mind reading but have over 40 years of intense practice in the martial arts. The moment I began to experiment with C.M.R., I was convinced that I recognized the skill you are referring to as being a skill that is a vital part of Kung Fu (not only Tai Chi). In the Chinese arts, power is referred to as "Jin" and in particular, the power employed to monitor an opponent's attacking Jin is referred to as "Sticky Jin". Once you are touching your opponent, they are unable to strike you as it becomes a simple matter of you being aware of when and where their energy is moving; often you are more acutely aware of their energy than they are. To me, contact mind reading is essentially the same skill.
