Well I just got my first Nelson Enterprises catalog. SO cool! but bittersweet because, well, most of it just isn't available anymore.
There are a few descriptions of the workings of some Nelson Enterprises products in SEANCE magazine, does anyone know if any of the other products have had their workings described anywhere? I was surprised to see things like High john The Conqueror Root in the catalog, but I suppose it does make sense. If anyone else is into old Hoodoo stuff, and doesn't already know about this link, check it out: http://www.churchofgoodluck.com/Curio_Catalogs.html

There are several Nelson collectors and you'd be surprised how much of Bob's material shows up from time to time. My old friend Diego Domingo has nearly everything ever sold from the Nelson catalogue including a couple of the old "Secret Inventions" which were small radio transmitters that used tiny tubes as they were built before transistors had been invented.

I used his Prediction Pen while in High School,at the Elks, Moose, etc. club shows. It worked great, I told him so and he put the plug in the catalog. I was strutting around for quite awhile after that.
His Tick sheets I used for decades, even into the late '70's at Magic Mountain during their Halloween Haunts. I will admit to being really ticked off when the package contents didn't quite match the Miraculous Miracles touted, with the gaffing so primitive...("I paid $5 for CARBON PAPER???!!!??") But that was before I valued the secret over the gimmick. I bought maybe 200 tick sheets from his Widow, via mail order, and she must have cleared the shelf, cause she sent me about a thousand. I'm probably out of them now. Fun times... I think Todd and Diego should get together.

I am a Nelson Collector, most of the stuff can be found except for some of the stuff that was manufactured in very small numbers. For example one of the Nelson prediction chest there are only five known. This is due to the fact the gentleman who made the chests for Nelson made only five before his death. In the Encyclopedia of Mentalism there is a medium table shown if anyone has information on this table other than what was in print in E of M please contact me.

Did not realize I was so lucky to own one of the Nelson Prediction Chests. Wow! In making a comparison of the two, it works like the Lloyds but not as intricate and a bit rougher. If that is the same one you are talking about.
I am also interested in info on the mediums table. Thanks

I have most of the Nelson catalogs, many booklets and MS and perhaps a dozen or so items. My old articles on Nelson appeared in the PEA's journal Vibrations. I will likely be reprinting them soon as a booklet for any interested. I will post here when they are available. It is mostly history along with how to make one Nelson item and how to get another popular one, both were used for seances. I hope Diego gets around to writing that definive Nelson book. Below are the contents of my booklet with 2 brand new articles likely to be added - estimated about 35 to 40 pages.
- Stefan Dardik working title "Secrets of Bob Nelson" CONTENTS 1. Who were the best mentalists and who the greatest according to Bob 2. A Visit to a Bob Nelson Séance 50 years ago [over 60 years ago now] 3. A conversation with Nelson friend David Dowd 4. Nelson visits a spirit camp in “I visited Lilly Dale” 5. Nelson’s Astral Light – A séance trick, how to make and use one 6. More conversation with David Dowd on the Talking Teakettle plus Diego Domingo – Nelson expert and historian 7. Bob Nelson – The Thayer of Mentalism 8. Alla Rageh – Larry Nelson – Bob’s big brother 9. Bob Nelson and the Spiritualists 10. How to get your own Phantom Ghost Projector 11. How to make a slide for the Phantom Ghost Projector [plus 2 new articles in the works] |

I have a Mental Broadcasting slate that I purchased from Nelson. It was built in 1970 and according to the instructions is the "84th in the world." I also have a set of Dr. Q slates purchased from him about the same time.

I had one of the "Secret Inventions" for years, David. Sold it just a couple of years ago, at an IBM Ring 46 club auction. I remember the "miniature hearing aid batteries" that were included. Today, we'd call 'em C-cells. Ahhhh..... fond memories. |
