I am working on a routine with "Rocky Raccoon". Can you recommend any books or videos containing ideas or material which could be adapted to rocky?

Hi Christian,
I have a few books with good ideas for Rocky. The only dedicated one is called "Spring Animals - your friends for life" by Larry Mahan (Published by SONshine Entertainment, Colorado Springs 1990) Greg MacMahan (I think he's from Atlanta, Georgia) has lots of great raccoon biz in his books "Balloons on the mailbox" and "Birthday Fun" There's also a routine in Sammy Smiths "Kiddie Patter and Little Feats" These are all routines for entertaining kids; I've so far not come across anything aimed for adults. I've heard of idiots doing gags that involve bashing the raccoons head against a table - that would be a pretty good way to alienate any animal lover in the audience, if thats what you want to do! I also have a really awful video by a prat named Steve Kirchner - avoid it like the plaque! There's another video by Jim Pace, which I've not yet seen but it's winging it's way to me from H & R Magic Books right now, so if you want a report on that, email me in a week. Cheers, Bill

Thanks for your post. I will order the Mahan book. However, I did not find the Greg MacMahan books yet.
I plan a complete adult raccoon routine. I got the Pace video in the meantime and I was very disappointed as I already mastered the technique of moving the animal quite well. The performance ideas were very basic and not very innovative. I never heard about Steve Kirchner, but now I will avoid the vid like the plaque... I also bought Williamsson's raccon video (produced by MacMillan). It is very good, but does not give ideas for routines including the raccoon. I have never seen anybody live performing a magic routine with the raccoon. Have you? How did people exploit the raccoon? How did they get away with the problem of having one hand "lost" to the raccoon mechanics. This reduces the possiblities of sleight of hand while operating the raccoon. Cheers Christian |

Hi Christian,
Re one handed magic routines to do with Rocky, you might like to check out books written for ventriloquists - there's some material written for them to do with their dummy, there's also some books on doing magic with hand puppets. I have one by Bill Kustes called 'Magic with a Hand Puppet', and another one by Pat Page called "How to entertain children with a glove puppet" Bill Boley has a book called 'Ventrilo-Magic' I know you're not doing ventriloquism, but the requirements are the same: you've got to do it all with one hand, without looking awkward. Also, most of these routines are written with kids in mind, but you can probably adapt a lot of the ideas for adults (most of my kids magic is actually kids presentations of adult tricks, I don't see why you can't reverse the traffic!) BTW there's currently a Rocky Raccoon thread on 'The little darlings forum' - check that out, too, if you haven't already. Cheers, Bill
