You are correct dm unfortunately some wannabe performers will never comprehend this and instead continue their journey searching for the trick that will make them a star. That's why they will never ever move from wannabe performers as they will never find that trick.

Just because they can be butchered doesn't mean there are no killer effects in mentalism. It almost sounds as if the consensus is that the effect doesn't matter. Its success is solely determined by the efficacy of the performer and his performance.
Although there is some truth in that notion let's not pretend the effect doesn't matter at all. Performers aside there are some very poor effects out there, even more mediocre ones and a much smaller group of effects that are worthy of being incorporated into the professionals repertoire. It's like telling a singer that his choice of songs don't matter. If you're good enough you'll fill the theater. Well, just like with mentalism, not all songs are created equal. In other words, a performers success will ultimately hinge on both his ability to perform AND the material he chooses to use.

So I would respectfully suggest taking an acting class. Robert-Houdin said that magicians are really actors playing the role of magicians. When you think, act, and behave like a mentalist who can boggle anyone's mind, you will be able to take an inexpensive effect and stun your audience. Sorry, this is ridiculous advice to people starting out in magic or mentalism. You'd get much more out of your acting class after you had some experience of performing - however in competent that performance might be. Even if that wasn't the case - and the best way to get ahead was to start of with an acting class rather than the classic publications - nobody would would follow such advice. People explore mentalism because they want to achieve the same feats (or at least evoke the same feelings) as other mentalists they've seen. People at the start of their journey will never have the motivation to follow a path which from their perspective looks only partially relevant. Its like seeing motorbike racing on TV and going down to your local race track to give it a go. Only to be told that really you need some good core strength to be a world class motorbike racer - so rather than getting a taste for it by doing a few laps at a lower speed - the person is advised to forget about riding motorbikes altogether and instead take some ballet classes to boost their core muscles.

So, Davit, you are calling perfectly valid advice "ridiculous" simply because most beginners won't follow it? Most beginners don't follow my advice when I tell them to start by reading books. So I guess that advice is "ridiculous" as well.
Or maybe you just enjoy calling other peoples suggestions ridiculous? NO ONE has suggested that beginning mentalists, like your motorbike rider, should forget about doing magic and concentrate on their acting. I've searched this thread closely and have seen no suggestion even approaching that. Or are you just being a bit cynical and suggesting that there is no point in giving good advice since very few will follow it anyway? Steven- I agree with you that choice of material is important. All effects are not inherently equal any more than they are inherently "mind boggling." That said, it takes a bit of experience to learn which effects are suitable and will prove "mind boggling" in the hands of each individual performer. Good thoughts, Bob |

Well I did indeed get the wrong end of the stick by skim reading the initial post. I thought he was starting out in the field and had no performance experience. But note my "even if that wasn't the case" - implying that I happen to think its not good advice for beginners.
I suppose how you measure the quality of one's advice. One can measure the advice itself - or the impact such advice has when it is delivered. Only the latter makes a difference to both the art in general and the progress of the person being advised. its the difference between idealism and pragmatism. You can feel all nice and happy inside that you've recommendatory great advice that isn't followed - but that may not be helping either the art or the person. One can have the "magic bullet" piece of advice for the budding performer, but if it isn't delivered effectively (and some pieces of advice are near impossible to deliver effectively to a rank amateur with zero understanding and a bad attitude) - then it is useless. The suggestion to take acting classes is one that I find a bit irritating on this forum even though I see immense value in the classes themselves. I see the idea being semi-regularly suggested, but frequently more as a sort of slap in the face to the questioner. DMKraig doesn't have anywhere near enough information to "respectfully" suggest an acting course. For all he knows the guy is a great actor already. Or he might only be an OK actor - but instead be working with poor material, or lacking in mentalism theory, or any number of other things.

Rick, I just wanted to let you know about an extremely powerful mentalism effect I recently witnessed--It is explained on Joshua Jay's newly released "Unreal" DVD set.
The magician calls a volunteer onstage and asks him to think of a random object, another completely different object, and then the color of his choice. In this case, the spectator chose a watch, a tie, and the color orange. The magician then asks the volunteer to mentally assemble these selections into a novelty object--for instance, you might choose to create an orage tie with watch faces printed on it, or a watch with orange ties printed on the band, or a tie made of watch bands that have been glued together. In this case, the spectator chose a watch with a band made from an orange neck tie. The magician then opens a box that has been in full view the entire time. Inside the bos is found a watch with a band made form an orange neck tie. These are the kinds of miiracles you can come up with--you just need to milk your creativity a little bit |

Theron-
Welcome to the Café. You might check out the dates of the posts you are replying to though. Rick aka Daston, posted the question you answered nearly five years ago and hasn't been seen since. And, as I noted the last time this thread was resurrected, the late Dick Christian, sadly, is no longer with us either. |
