Basically, if you're into mem deck work, the consensus is that you need to take a look at this book.

I'm actually new to this type of work. But I heard that this book is the best resource on the subject..

Mnemonica IS a great source, and ImpromptuBoy, mem deck work allows the performance of miracles just not possible by other means.
I would ALSO advise you to check out Aronson as well. Since, by your words, your are new to this work, make certain not to mistake a memdeck for a cyclic or purely mathematical system - although John Cornelius for instance has some cool work in this area. Regardless, Mnemonica is authored by one of magic's LEGENDS and if you are at ALL interested in mem deck work, you cannot go wrong with either Tamariz or Aronson. Buy it bro!! Ahimsa, Vlad PS: Want to have fun after you get the book? (You ARE getting it, yes??) Check out the raging debates on the Café regarding which stack - Aronson or Tamariz - is better. Pretty amusing stuff since BOTH are great IMHO. |

Yes, very true, you should read Tamariz and Aronson. Then you get an overview what is possible. And let me add (as European!) that the writings of Aronson are going deeper. Jan

That's what I say. But concerning all writings of Aronson. "Bound to please" is already excellent. To be more precise: just watch the constructions of his routines. Nevertheless everyone should read Tamariz AND Aronson. Jan

If you are considering getting into memdeck work then both Aronson and Tamariz are worthy of study. In general, and of course not all will agree, Mnemonica has a greater diversity of effects while the Aronson effects generally possess a "more layered construction". That is to say, even people aware of MD magic will not likely be able to backtrack most of the Aronson effects.
That is not to say the Tamariz effects are inferior. Far from it. In fact, if you were only going to get one book on MD magic to see if it fits you, I'd recommend Mnemonica first simply because the depth and breadth of material is so extensive. I find myself revisiting the Tamariz book often because there's so much in it, but you won't go wrong with material from either of these creators.

A quick question about Mnemonica: How many of the effects in that book are stack-independent?

Jan is correct. I don't have the book in front of me but a good guess would be that about 80% is stack independent.

I'm thinking about getting this book as well but I heard from a few friends that said for a fair number of the effects you need to be able to do a perfect Faro Shuffle and the sad thing is that after over 4 years of working on it I've only ever been able to do a perfect Faro Shuffle MAYBE 10 times out of the thousands of times I've tried doing it, I'm always something like 2 or 3 cards away from getting a perfect Faro about 98% of the time. If that is the case then I'll probably forego this book and forget about memdeck work.

You can perform miracles with a mem deck without doing any faro shuffle.

Learning a mem deck is one of the best investments in time you can possibly make.

On the bottom of page 82 of Mnemonica for the classic acaan, it says to subtract 8 from 53. Shouldn't it be 8 from 52? When I subtract from 53, I'm always 1 card off.
